Jim Your comments about the Classiche programme seem to have been mainly negative, so I'm quite surprised to see that you are having 002C 'Classiched'. Have you changed your mind about the Classiche programme, or are there other reasons why you have gone this route with 002C? Nathan PS Can you keep us updated with your thoughts and photos as you go through the process?
Hi As you know there are new people at Classiche who I met and feel good about. There are workers in Modena who have a certain "je ne sais quois" so when we decided to restore 002 to her original configuration. (#78 Turin GP Winner) we thought that was the place to do it. Sport Auto is doing the work and Ferrari has been very helpful. When we're done they've asked to display her at the Galleria for a while. As I'm not there as much as I would be if we did this in the US I'll have fewer photo's but I will try to get and post as many as I can. I've enjoyed working with FIVA and ASI and find all of it interesting. No more than that to it. I also enjoyed talking to Ferrari Classiche about 0858 even if we still disagree a bit on that one's race results. (Brands Hatch Finish). Best
As a casual observer in the Vintage forum I was quite surprised to read that as well. Partially because of past comments, but also because the car looked perfect to me already. Anyway, Jim I recalled reading here that since you like to drive her often you had replaced the valve springs in the engine with a more traditional design for reliability purposes. Also, I recalled this brief thread about the updated fuel cell you built for her during the last restoration. Will either of those updates pose an issue with Classiche certification? Where do they draw the line between truly 100% original and changes that have been made to aid in longevity or provide additional safety - concerns that weren't necessarily a prime factor on the original build? >8^) ER
To be honest, it kind of baffled me as well, but considering that 002C hasn't been "original" since the 50's it's kind of a moot point. My feeling is that there are probably some missing pieces that are going to be filled in by the factory, and finally putting the notion of "oldest Ferrari in existence" to bed may be a good thing. I'm pretty sure that they know her driving modifications are to remain intact. IMHO, and if she was mine, I'd love to see a re-cast block from the factory that would keep the original in a safe place. I think there are a few of us on the forum who cringe at the thought of such a thing leaving us (and I'm just thinking out loud, I'm not suggesting that I know anything about the Classiche program for her because I don't). Just a wish-list for the future.
Basically we're going to correct minor things as best we can but the valve springs and fuel safety bladder will remain. The thread with the valve springs is the latest rebuild in Modena. Korr The first Ferrari I tried to buy in 1967 (I couldn't come up with 3K) was an 750 Monza with a 327 Chevy engine. (The original blown engine was included). It was scary fast and very cool. Best
I can understand misgivings about putting a relatively new Ferrari through Certification, but, having 002C breathe rarefied air while having bitsas sorted seems a tailor made match in heaven - like a visit to the *ahem* S.p.A. in the Motherland.
Interesting update. Not too long ago, the wisdom here was that anyone who dealt with Classiche - a soulless profit center - was a "sucker"
Don't know if this is the right thread to post them but i have found the following 2 pictures which i took in the Dutch museum "autotron" back in 1988... Look closely and you will see 002C... . Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Fantastic exhibition that was! I have posted some photos of it a while back, including one or 2 of 002C
Considering the older, more noteworthy cars [just thinking] all should consider the program as a kind of date-time-stamp to keep some owners on track...not saying Napolis is one of those or the Admiral's Mondial [I like his concept of stewardship], but seems some should go through the program just to qualify what has been done to them before they get entirely lost to someone's personal taste.
