My 1978 308 GTB has the old single hood prop up pole with the cable mechanism. Unfortunately the cable came loose and I can't figure out how it was attached to the pole. Has anybody got a clear picture of the lower part of the pole and how the cable is attached to it? Many thanks!

    Best regards, Peter

    Nobody? :(

It seems that I've lost the part between the pole and the cable. The picture shows the pole I'm talking about (green arrow).

This is the clearest shot I've got without taking more photos. If you need more detail, then let me know and I'll take a couple of close-ups. You'll have to wait a week or so as I'm out of town at the moment.

Thanks! The part I'm missing is the piece that runs in the rail and which connects the pole to the cable. If you could get some close ups of that construction It'd be very helpful.

Be glad to help if I can in anyway...

Some pieces of the prop rod system are NLA, and you may have to build the equal....

I thought so too. I just inspected it further. Positive: the piece connecting the pole to the cable is still there (it was hidden in the rail). Negative: it seems it has broken off (right on the green line in the picture).

Not sure if I can refabricate this...

    Hi all
I did not even realise that the prop had any sort of cable connected to it. I have just looked at the parts drawing and now its all coming clear, however I would like some clarification as to what I am missing, I have the small round part which I presume should have a spring inside? Can anyone elaborate on what this should do etc.

    regards

I assume the round part you mention is the one in this picture (green arrow)?

I think there's indeed some sort of spring mechanism inside that wants to pull the cable in (to the right when standing behind the car).

If the hood is lifted, the round thing pulls the cable which pulls the pole upright in a controled way because the lower part of the pole has a runner in a rail (see picture posted earlier).

    Hi
Yes that is the round thing I was talking about, I have just taken it apart, it looks broken and there does not look anywhere for the cable to affix to.
The pole end only has a very small hole at the bottom by the rubber parts, does the cable affix to this somehow?
Does anyone have a close up photo of the whole mechanism?

I took some pictures today. Apologies for the poor lighting, it's quite dark underneath the engine lid.

First picture shows how the pole is attached to the lid.

In the second picture you can see the cable on the left, the lower part of the pole which rests on the rail or gutter including a bump stop.

The third picture shows the gutter/rail.

The fourth picture shows the round thing with the spring inside and the cable.

The fifth en sixth pictures show the bump stop for the pole and the cable goes through this bump stop.

How the cable is fixed to the pole can be seen in the picture posted earlier by newbydude. There's a part that connects the cable to the pole. This part has two small wheels that guide it through the gutter/rail.

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards, Peter

    Hi
Does anyone know if the spring box comes with a new cable attached, I also am a little unsure how the cable attaches to the prop end, I do not have the part with the screw on, any ideas??

    regards

The cable came with the spring and barrel in '89 when I ordered a replacement for mine.

Here's a follow up on this subject. Alsa Automotive repaired the lower joint for me (thanks Al!), using the picture below.

However the pole wasn't erecting or folding smoothly. I studied the picture below and the parts manual closely. It turns out that the lower bended joint in the picture should bend the other way around. I've turned it around and now it works smoothly again.

The joint on the top of the pole that meets the engine lid has also got one correct position. It can't bend the other way so beware.

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards, Peter

    Hi
I have just bought a new cable spring box from Ferrari U.K. and still cannot work out how the cable fixes to the pole itself,I guess it somehow fixes through the smaller of the two holes?
I have attached a picture of the new part and the pole and its wheels, does anyone have a close up of how its fixed or have I got a part missing still?

    Hi,

You're missing the cable screw that I've marked green in the picture below. You just loop the cable through the small hole and secure it with the missing screw thingy.

The bigger hole is for the small wheels. Your pole is positioned correctly in your picture.

    Best regards, Peter

    Hi Peter
Thanks for that, the screw you mention is on the part I bought, you can just see it on my picture (brass, up against the box). I can get it sorted now.

    Regards

    Phil
