    Straman convertible registry

I have been building a Straman Convertible Registry for many years. This registry includes all conversions including Mercedes, Rolls Royce, Mitsu 3000GT, Nissan 300ZX, Honda CR-X, Firebird/Camaro, Cadillac and many more. I have purposely not made attempts to get too deep into the Ferrari conversions because they seems to already be well researched by members here.

But I think it’s time for me to ask a few questions of the experts on this forum. My data shows that R. Straman built convertibles from:
    Ferrari Daytona
    Ferrari 275GTS/4
    Ferrari 400i/412,
    Ferrari 512BB Targa
    Ferrari Testarossa
    Ferrari 456
    Ferrari 550 Maranello

Others may very well exist, but since I have not been tracking the Ferrari conversions, this list may be incomplete.

I am hoping that you can provide me with the total estimated number built for each model Ferrari. My records from a 1990 publication show that they built 40 Ferrari Daytona spyders, 9 Ferrari 275GTS/4, 51 Ferrari 400i/412, 3 Ferrari 512BB Targa, 22 Ferrari Testarossa. I have found the counts from that same publication to be questionable for the non-Ferrari conversions, so I wonder how accurate they are for the Ferraris. Any photos you can share will also be helpful.

Also, any Straman statistics or interesting stories you care to share are welcome. Did any of you meet Richard Straman? Had any of you been to the shop before it closed? Does anyone know what year they closed?...it seemed to be about 1999 or 2000.

Agreed! Why would they not produce this instead of the 550 PFB?

Did he use any identifyling lables or name plates? Were there any paticular identifying charicteristics for his conversions.

My 400i has a manual top, soft tonneu cover and no sun visors. No exterior stiffeners either underside or around the doors.

I met Richard Straman in 1974. He converted a Daytona coupe to a convertible. At that time the cost was $25000 which included the conversion and paintwork as well as some interior modification.

He was very cool and knowledgeable. He delivered on time.

    Is he still in business?

You can't have a registry without serial numbers. We need serial numbers! Stan, thank you - do you know the serial number of the other cut Maranello?

Hello, Howard M! You've been around almost as long as I (89 now). Glad to see that you're still doing Ferraris.

The other 550 is owned by the man that started Guess Jeans, lives in LA, and has several cars,. He was discussed here, but I do not remember if that serial number came out.

The gentleman I bought it from is a doctor in Tampa named Ed. I would like to see him and reunite him with the car for lunch maybe. Something neat to do. I think about 2006 he was chatting more. I do not believe he is here often now.

From the last I heard the Guess guy kind of went nuts and lost all his money. One time when I drove by he had 7 550/575s, 1 F430, and one 612 (all in red and yellow) in his driveway but they are all gone now.
