I think that the use of the name 288 GTO is mistaken.
Officially for FERRARI is GTO, and in this way it is reflected also in the FERRARI website, the right name is GTO.
The other car is 250 GTO .
The only GTO is our lovely GTO.

I think the GTO started as an "308 GTO" during "prototype"stage. I have only seen a GTO being badged as "288 GTO" once which was in the (non-official) Ferrari yearbook 1984/1985. However the official presskit never called the car 288 GTO only "GTO"

Andrew, it is just my opinion, but I dont think you should be posting a clear pic of the car AND LICENSE PLATE! and ask for ownership information in the public forum.

    Thats a little creepy... IMO.

Andrew: its a well-known car, featured in this thread several times before, in post 3869, page 194, for example. I was told by somebody that there was only one 288 GTO at the Ferrari Nationals, but I think there were 2 with only one being shown.

Probably Andrew meant "who" for the identification of the car, no ?

Of course, your point is well-taken.

But, the fact remains that there are thousands of images of cars posted on F-Chat with the number plates in clear view, often posted that way by the very people who own them. In fact there are threads to show off vanity number plates. Its impossible to delete the number plates of every image, and in fact many people are interested in those identifying markings in order to establish different cars and where they are located, purely as a matter of interest amongst an enthusiasts community.

What I try and do in my postings is delete the owner's last name if they are not a public figure, and say such-and-such car is owned by Joe S, for example. I see this form of limited identification is well-practiced amongst lots of users.

    Thanks

This thread is amazing.... I had to be Mr. mom today for our sitter was a no show. I have sat and read almost the entire thing...(almost...I'll finish it tonight) while my kids ran around and tore up the house while I sat in a stupor tansfixed all day on this thread.
This car was introduced the year I turned 14yrs old and to this very day remains the most beautiful car ever built. My best friend and I for the last 26yrs made a pact in 1987 that if either of us were ever fortunate enough and wealthy enough, that we would buy each others dream car. Well.....I'm still waiting....and so is he! I keep him updated on the 288 GTO market and he keeps me updated on the 1987 Buick GNX market status. I think I'll come out ahead if I make the money first or win the lottery.
I told my wife the that if I become a half a millionaire that I will spend every cent on a 288.....she just gave me that look....glare all you want I said, but this car is my first true love and you can never take that away.

If I'm understanding correctly there is a 288 going across the block at an RM auction on the 13th of this month in Monterey, Oh how I long to be there that weekend. That's even my 41st B-day weekend and to see that many 288's in one place would be heaven...in fact it would probably kill me out of sheer anxiety.
Joe, I would love to reserve a book if that is at all possible and if anyone ever needs to know who or what manufacture makes the most accurate scale model of this car send me a pm I have or have had them all and I can steer you in the right direction.

Now for a little eye candy for all....although I don't own them I do take care of them and here are just a few pics.

Chassis number 54805 with 37,000 km /23,000 miles crosses the block at the Monterey RM auctions, one of just a handful of California-legal GTOs.

    It's weird to think about.

There is now more years between the "new" GTO and now (84 to 09), than there was between the first GTO and the new when the new was produced (62 to 84) :)
