Hello all- I have joined the ferrari forums becuase I am in search of some information on the Ferrari F40 I have been doing some research and I cant seem to find what im looking for. 1. Im looking for some sort of picture timeline to show the evolution of the F40. 1987 to 1992. I also joined the forums becuase what better place to ask then the specialists. 2. I also would like to know where you can purchase parts for these cars, such as engine, rims, ect. 3. Is there a certain year of the F40 that stands out for any reason? Favorable, or special edition? Any information on this car would be great. I have already read about the basic information presented by wiki and some google cites. Still I thought this would be the place to ask! Please help this lost Subaru owner out! -Tim
I dont think there is any visual difference between the model year if you compare an early US car to a late car. Same for the Euro cars. The only difference was that some Euro car were ordered with the racing window ( cant roll them dowm, just slide a little window from front to rear ). You buy parts from dealer/factory for original stuff. You buy upgrades from the usual aftermarkets companies such as Michelotto, Tubi etc.. People say the 92 is the best as it is the last year and Ferrari was new to Carbon Kevlar so they were learning along the way. As for a Euro car, IMO, the best cars are early ones as they are decat.
Thanks for the info. I do see some difference in the headlights. Some have round light bulbs and some have square? Is that a year difference or modification. Also F40 LM I am assuming is a type of F40. Are there other types? Tim
Joe Sackey might be able to help but i think the later 92 US cars had a few mechanical upgrades. Could be mistaken.
there were more racing versions than that... you can see them all on http://www.qv500.com/indexferrari7.php
They were entered in at least three different Euro racing Series, so yes, there's several racing variants.. Cavallino recapped them all, I cannot recall which issue though, and there's a new Japanese published book that pretty much covers the whole story, but it costs $500. Welcome anyway!
'87-'92 road cars, no real differences. Some had sliding windows, rest roll ups, some had red inner door panels, some black, some had black air boxes, some silver. Just small things like that. Many like the early Euro cars due to the fact they had no cats. As for the USA cars, even though some say the '92 cars have some improvements in the composite material work, I can't say I have seen any proof of that. IMO they are all bad ass cars and FYI the factory backed race cars were made as late as '98.
There are so many, and some quite substantial, differences as to exceed the scope of this forum. The frames are SUBSTANTIALLY different-especially with respect to the steel gussets for the roof support, and the front aand rear valence supports, for tarters....The early World cars had "cooler" but funkier carbon-and the World cars had MUCH less fiberglass support. Yes, its true, the NorthAmerican version has much more Fiberglass as a support, as a crash impact energy dispersal compound-the GVW between the 2 versions of cars is in the HUNDREDS of kilos....rooof gussets are something like 60-75 kilos in a box on the floor! There are NO part numbers-FYI.... Induction, turbos, ECUS, boost control circuit, wastegate-it's control and circuitry-intercoolers, fuel tanks, pumps, rectified/conditioned 5v injection sub-circuitry, wide band pumping cells(not really oxygen sensors to get technical...) All this, from a machinist who started out with 1984 288GTOs to be EPA lab certified. {For them them as well as the arly world cars, to pass the FTP-75 program is, well, for all practical terms, the same-they share the same P/Ns in the Parts Book(!), in MANY instances....} the "paper mache", 1987 "1st runs", 50 cars ONLY, plastic door windows with fish nets, the 1989-90 non-kat cars, real production cars, the USA Kat cars 1990-92, what we see here, and the World version Kat cars. The best of both worlds-IMHO... F-40s COULD have been made to pass the "modify and test" format, as set forth under Idependent Commercial Importer rules specifically set forth by the CFR, and spelled out so clearly by the EPA abd DOT websites, if it WERE NOT for the frame issues noted. This differentiation in construction was specifically brought forth to their attention, and as a result of such specificity by the MANUFACTURER-FERRARI-were antiseptically separated from the North American cars as a COMPLETELY, separete, vehicle-legally-as compared to the others... Simply put, it cannot withstand the crash testing as performed by BOTH the TUV in Wst Germany, and the USAs DOT. The EPA portion of the process is, actually, for those familiar and capable of executing a small volume certifacate of manufacture,...a relatively simply-but costly-exercise "in "same old, same old...." As for parts...."parts is parts,"...buy them, trade them....or..... make them....these are 20 year old cars now-a shop owner recently quipped to me that: "they were for "rich guys then, and richer guys today..." Race cars are not considered relavant for this conversation- as the "real " factory cars are F-40LMs, all but 1 or 2 of the 17(?)was wrecked and re-built.... race cars do that...all the others are individual case studies in race car "applications of theory" Imagine what a World version car, 100K in "moderrn materials, mods, and updates, WITH... a FACTORY dog ring gear box would be like....I doubt more than 2 dozen readers could extract the true performance of such a monstrous car....I certainly can't...in a 20 year old car........scary thought-WHAT A MACHINE....
You couldn't be more wrong on that one. As far as I know not one factory LM was "wrecked" and out if the 19 built only two were even raced. The rest went into private collections....
