Well done Bill! The observation that I am making is that Enzo Ferrari era Supercars are the sub-3000 lb cars and Im impressed with how light the USA F40 is given its performance potential.
Please then, owners of these cars get your GPS out, record the 60-130, and send the results to Bill. As theyr'e such quick cars you don't need much road to do this, just a flat bit! Jim must have scales wherever he sets his cars up for the track so hopefully he will do this and send in his 60-130 too?? I agree the 60-130 is the real life test, but the power to weight is interesting. Thanks again! Will
Bill, so the F40 was weighed with the luggage? Most F40s don't have luggage so I wonder what it would weigh without it.
Correct, and without it I think the car would weigh in with a full tank at 2999 lbs! Of further interest, you may recall that I had mentioned to you that the factory standard equipment "Suzy Haymaker" exhaust is a hefty thing, and those who mount the Tubi straight pipes save a further 10lbs, but of course that's not original equipment.
3 piece Schedoni fitted luggage is a rare appointment with the Eu cars. However, with the USA F40, when the cars were being ordered the concessionaire invited every order to specify what they wanted on the luggage, and I am assured that in fact most USA F40s were supplied new with the luggage. In the field the USA F40s I encounter are about 50/50 with or without luggage, and this percentage seems to diminish with time as the cars gain successive owners and the luggage is not always passed along for whatever reason.
My point was that most people who actually drive the cars don't leave the luggage in the car while out a Sunday morning cruise in the hills. It's hard to believe that luggage only weighs 2 pounds.
It was strange seeing 3001 lbs displayed for the F40. It was even stranger seeing the F50 and Scuderia weighing EXACTLY the same with a full tank of gas... ...and learning that a single Veyron tire costs $11,000. Or an F50 weighs 14 lbs more than a Challenge Stradale... or an Enzo weighs 120 lbs more than an F50... which weighs 128 lbs more than an F40... which weighs 94 lbs more than a 288 GTO. Not bad for 12 vs 8 cylinders, and all the extra emission and safety equipment in a much larger car. But the most surprising was an Enzo weighing only 9 lbs more than a GT3 RS! Come on Porsche, the engine is twice the size! Even the CF CGT with a V10 weighs 23 lbs more than an Enzo! Nice to see the modern Ferraris approaching the weight of Ferraris 15 years older... at least with the CS and Scuderia.
I did! I'm already writing some new Trivia Pursuit questions. Here's a hard one: Which weighs more: an Enzo or a Stradale with Paris Hilton inside?
Whatever the luggage weighs, it would be enough to tip the scales below the 3,000 mark, so I'm going with 2,999 to be on the safe side! But since you have your doubts, I will put the matter to rest by weighing my set of F40 luggage, separating each of the 3 pieces, and determining their respective weight, so we can make the appropriate deduction for the sake of accuracy. Hows that?
Bill it would be revealing to see if as a result of your project, anyone's preferences for a particular model has now changed...
Joe, I would expect that. In my opinion, weight is right up there with style. It just adds to the mystique of the vehicle and it's a sign of fine engineering. For me, it's very satisfying to know that Ferrari can produce a V12 (6-liter) super car (Enzo) that weigh only 9 lbs more than a 6-cylinder (3.6-liter) GT3 RS with aluminum doors and hood... and the Enzo is 9" longer and 9" wider! Anyone seeing the cars side-by-side would not believe it.
Bill, Have you attempted to weigh any Lambos yet? It would be interesting seeing what those come in at. Good work so far!
This is a fantastic thread, thanks for all your work! Any plans to weigh some other cars? Would be fascinating to see "real world" weighs for that 300SL in the pics or the 427 Cobra street car...
Don't forget all the added weight the F40 has for the turbochagers/intercoolers/piping too. I'd love to see just how much less a Euro one weighs then a USA car. I'd bet at least 200 pounds....
What makes up for the weight difference between US and Euro F40s? I know that the US F40 has the black front splitter, and I figured it would have some extra emissions equipment , is that all?
That wasn't planned for this project, but if someone has one in the Southern Cal area, PM me. I'd be happy to weigh it with a full tank of gas. I'd like to weigh the LP640 or Reventon. Symbolic may have these cars.
The one car I'm very curious about is the 599GTB. The market prices are very appealing, the fact that it uses an Enzo engine and it is selling under $300k in the used market is very appealing.
