Wow. I am not surprised they are that rare. Even when I lived in Southern California I saw more Jaguar XJ220's than I did 288 GTO's. I'm being serious. Of course the XJ220 is incredibly rare but I only saw 4 288's and 9 XJ220's. The XJ220 is a cool looking car, but the 288 is absolutely stunning and has aged incredibly well.

So it is back on the islands - this car gets used regularly but always looks so good. Obviously well kept.

quick question if anyone is familiar with the topic: for GTOs that are California-compliant, I believe the State of California provides the California bar sticker.
anyone know if they place an actual sticker on the car, and where its located?

and also, anyone have a list of the Chassis#/vin#s for those GTOs which are california Bar stickered?

is the monterey car a california bar car? someone asked me some of the above. i was clueless on it.

    tx in advance.

    Steve:

Yes, Ferrari 288 GTO ZFFPA16B000058405 which is going over the block at the Monterey RM Auctions next Saturday night is indeed a California emissions compliant vehicle with BAR sticker affixed. According to my (often erroneous) notes, it is 1 of just 5 Ferrari GTOs that can claim this status.

Yes, a California compliant 288 GTO will have a BAR sticker affixed to it and it is located in the car's driver side door jamb. You will find that it is a silver adhesive-backed tin-foil sticker which contains the compliant car's VIN number stamped upon it, and the Bureau of Automotive Repair identification number for the particular car (as registered with the State) embossed upon it in red ink. It measures approximately 2" by 3" in size. When you go to SMOG the car in California every 2 years, that number will tell the test station whether the car qualifies for testing or not.

Is this required to legally register a 288 GTO in California for street use? Assuming all thing being equal would this make this particular car more valuable than ones without it?

Yes, in order to renew road registration for a 288 GTO in California you need a BAR sticker in place. If you see a 288 GTO operating in California that does not have California plates, it is either being driven by an out-of-state resident who is operating the car as a 'visitor' (such as you might see in Carmel next weekend), or it is being driven by a dealer who is operating the car as part of his dealer inventory on dealer plates. As you can see, in California we are drowning in a sea of red tape and useless bureaucratic systems, but we have to follow the law.

I cant see a BAR sticker GTO being more valuable to anyone other than someone who maintains a home in California and wants to keep it here, but, there is always that status thing that will have appeal for some where they can say it is "one of five" such cars and has the potential to be registered here.

I am not sure if BAR is still issuing certification for these cars.

dude, lets go! time to put up your estimate! Price is Right!!
I do agree 750 will be a long shot. car has a history, paint, miles, still a super machine./
id say 550, 600 would be a very very reasonable target.
my saying 500 to 700 was just being cute. 750 would be a big suprise.
but it is a gto. and its monterey. the stock market is at some 18month high or something like that.
someone ought to chart the stock prices of GTOs vs. the dow jones, or the nasdaq.
    gotta be an Outperform!

I am able to report the appearance of a very special 288 GTO at the Reunion: the last one built.

Even though Ron Tonkin is (sadly) unable to be with us in person, he has made special provision to ensure that 58345 will be present for the weekend, shown with a document from Ferrari SpA attesting to its provenance!
