My 330GTC seems flawless (have only owned it for 2 months) and it has not seen restoration or major work since 1990. In those 20 years it's done close to 40,000km without any major issue, and I've just done 5,000km in 2 weeks with it myself, taken it all over Europe (with Boxer365 - was fun following your 360!) without issue apart from vapour lock on a mountain pass and in a traffic jam. Although I agree that these cars need the owner to stay on top of them, I find the same with all my Ferraris and once you do the ownership experience can be all that you think it could be. To stay away from classic Ferraris just because you think they could be troublesome means you're missing out on something wonderful.

So do they need cosseting? Yes. Do they need constant restoring? Not at all. Just my $0.02.

18k miles in the 550 Maranello in 24 months.
4k miles in the 365BB in 10 months.
4k miles in the 330GTC in 2 months.

Considering that I only have access to my cars about 40 days a year, I think that's pretty good! :)

Longest drives in 1 day:

550 Maranello: Innsbruck - Amsterdam, 610 miles. Thanks to the German Autobahn I did that in 6 hours, epic drive.
365 BB: London - Amsterdam, 331 miles.
330GTC: Geneva - Amsterdam, 607 miles. Miserable drive in 11 hours of torrential rain and traffic jams ... :)

Really cool pic, thanks! Amazing how small Dino Competizione is compared to that Ford Ranger (who is following way way too closely btw).

Jim, did you bring P4/5 this year as well?

If I need to restore it in the next 5 years, I'll buy your book. Don't pop the champagne yet.

This is a great thread. I've enjoyed every post. I especially like seeing all of you that have "rescued" your Ferrari from a previous garage queen owner.

Hey, Pap, it's not like I've been living in the dark, there's a full thread about my experiences in the Vintage section. :) I'll keep updating it.

And you stole it from me! In the 2nd grade I wrote an essay for Mrs. Hope's class and I wrote, "And my mother said, "I'll be back."

Little update:

Just got back from a 2,500km trip to Germany. The car has done 10,000km (6000 miles) since we got it roughly 50 days ago. Miles fly when you're having fun :)

What a car and what a summer!

Hi all, I'm new to this wonderful forum nd I just discovered thisthread..You shouldn't let it die! So I share my fabulous experience with my father's Scuderia (and himself!)! We had the chance to do over 8500 km with it since he bought it back in November, most of it on some racetracks in Italy (Mugello, Monza, Franciacorta...) and it's been only fun!
By the way, Napolis, I am a big fan of your garage and as I live in Paris and I saw the pics of your P4/5, do you plan to return here anytime soon?

The other big downside to storing a collection is the damage to seals in the engine, transmission, cooling and hydraulic systems. I have two identical cars, one a low-mileage garage queen, the other a high-mileage example with over 100K additional miles. The high-mileage example is leak-free and more powerful than the low-mileage example that needed crank seals, a transmission seal, and a new water pump the first time I tried to drive it after dealer servicing!
"I have a good friend/customer that owns several Ferraris and won't drive them because they will go down in value... It's a shame he didn't enjoy his collection because they have gone down in value recently."
We will be Racing P 4/5 Competizione at the 24 Hours of Nurburgring next June.

I love Paris and hope to be back there soon.
