Just got back from a midnight show. Very intense movie, possibly the best new sci-fi in the last couple of years. Combines a morality storyline about immigrants, poverty/shantytowns, illegal aliens (human ones) etc, with a chase movie and a lot of action. There's a wonderful irony of them setting it in Johannesburg and actually filming it in an African shantytown.

The lead actor does a phenomenal job, going to be a big breakout for him; also a stunning job for the first-time-feature director (as I was told). If that's true he's going to displace Zack Snyder as the sci-action boy-du-jour. Downsides: The shootout violence gets pretty graphic at times and the language is heavy consistent with what would happen when documenting a war, and there are a half dozen CGI sequences where the light and color rendering could have been touched up (or degraded to look natural). I read a comparison earlier to Starship Troopers, ST to D9 is like Batman Forever to Batman Begins, if not closer to Dark Knight.
