Dealer wants $26,500 for it. 43,000 miles; 6 speed, navigation (aftermarket I think); midnight blue w/cinnamon leather interior.

I've never owned a Porsche before. Is this a recommended year or lots of troubles?

The 3.4 litre 996 engines have had their share of troubles! Most Porsche enthusiasts will recommend spending a bit more to purchase a 2002 or later model vehicle instead. 2002 had the larger 3.6 litre engine, and updated front end/headlights too!

+1, go with an '02+ 996 for the upgrades.

    Better yet get a Turbo.
Completely different engine. Upgraded in every significant area. I would not consider a NA 996.

true. but decent 996 turbos are still $50k plus (double what the one he's looking at costs)

I owned a 2000 C2, never had a single problem with it, in fact of all the 39 Porsche's I owned, it was the only one that never went back to the dealer for anything.

I've seen decent GT3's for that. "Better" than a turbo, for the right person. Shop around, an OK TT can be had for @40.
PS; forget the Porsche navigation as a $100 Garmin is better.

    Check RMS for leaks.

Don't you guys think that if the RMS is faulty, that it would have been addressed in the 8 years it's been on the road? Or that in the 8 years it's been on the road, that if no problems have been found in the RMS, chances are that the RMS is okay?

An RMS replacement is about $800 - $1,000 depending on the shop............the "natural brown" leather interior is hideous IMHO on a blue car.
