The good news is the driver is okay. I'm sure there's more damage than the photos show but, still, that's not all that bad all things considered. Race cars have been crashed and repaired for generations, and this one will be no different.
Dave Love and I go back to the early/mid 60s. I raced him several times in my Merlyn MK6a. Sorry to see this, but I'm glad Dave's OK
+1 Thankfully he was not hurt. I really admire men like Mr. Love who appreciate the car and its' spirit by not being afraid to use it as such. He is in my humble opinion a true enthusiast and I can only wish there were more collectors like him. Nothing is quite as disheartening as someone who purchases a car, writes a blank check to over restore it and then does nothing but trailer it from event to event in the pursuit of a silver bowl. I love the guys who can afford to preserve these works of art but aren't afraid to fire them up and drive them. Kudos to them.
Yes, I believe they'll both be fine. If it weren't a brake failure, I think they may have soldiered on in days of old. Quite an exciting flight I expect. He did a decent job under the circumstances. I hope to see him return.
All part of the game. DL is fine, some aluminium bent out of shape, it'll re-appear with a freesh fender and fresh paint. If you go skiing, you may break a leg.
This is running in General Ferrari Discussion... there's a link there with more frames. I took the liberty of making a short movie in Movie Maker of them to see the crash in something like real time. Too big to post so here's a link to it: http://tinyurl.com/r347z8 - let it fully buffer then play again for the full motion. Jedi
Glad the owner/driver is OK! As others have said, I suspect it is a straightforward repair. Regards, Art S.
Exactly what I was thinking. Fantastic photographer, so sad about the car. Hopefully it can be fixed, glad the driver is okay.
Amazing photography! Hurts to see a lovely car like that damaged, but at least it was being used for what it was intended. Onno
The original engine and transmission are in the car where they belong. The build plate and engine stampings all match with 0754. In increasing order, this car was a ball o'junk in 60, DNF'd at LeMans in 58, and Dave is not hurt.
David and his wife Mary-Hoe are lovely people, so it's sad to see this happen. But given the time and miles they have put on this car in vintage events, it's amazing that this is the worst that has happened. A testament to David's skill, I guess. More power to them for using the car as intended; I'm sure it will be back soon.
I was expectng something much worse...IMO thats really not that bad. The glancing motion of the hit probably dissapated much of the force and the frame is most likely ok...just some body and inner strucutre work.
David's a great guy who always takes time to talk cars with anyone who stops by his trailer, which I've done many times over the years. I'm glad to hear he's ok. 0754TR had suffered accident damage when he bought it and, after 35 years of driving the car in the Monterey Historics (I think this is the only driver/car combination to race every year since its inception), I doubt this will slow him down. Hope to see him out there again next year.
I was expecting it to be worse. Whoever took all those pics must have been pretty good. As for the car, I'm sure it will be fine and I am glad that the driver is ok and actually uses the car as it was intended. -Ryan
That is a fact. I knew of a guy in So Cal that had a couple of really rare Ferrari's that he would race and he never raced with the original engine or trannies. Thakfully the driver was not hurt. I am glad these cars are still raced. They are Ferrari's and are meant to be driven. I would much rather see and hear the car then to just see it locked up in a garage or museum.
I was thinking that the damage was going to be much worse prior to opening up the link. Glad to see the owner is OK and the car can be repaired.
I had a feeling that might be the case -- There seemed to be some throttle still applied as he went through the gravel. Whatever the case may be, it's amazing that he's driven it this many years without incident and that he managed to avoid a more serious crash. Much respect for enjoying the machine as he does!
