It's worth a closer look but I would not expect to pay a lot for it. It almost certainly looks better here than in person (I am not talking about the shiny red paint).

 

I agree, I haven't seen the car but it sounds like its been thrashed on in the parking garage where its sat for 10 years, damaged interior and smashed glass, the real reason it was parked is unclear possibly mechanical issue. Combine that with a total respray, engine reseal or rebuild possibly new interior you are gonna be in this car big bux and a long project.


I think there are much better deals out there for a nice car.

I like how they put the rear engine cover up....a little too far...at that angle I know it is causing some damage at the hinge point. It does need saved though!

With the current U.S. market trends, the buyer will still be financially upside down in value, at the end of the restoration.


Imagine 50K for the donor car + the cost of the engine rebuild and compare those two numbers with today's S2 value. You will still have a lot of mechanical and cosmetic issues (+ the unknown) that will have to be addressed during the restoration. I would look to buy at 35K and assume almost everything needs to be restored and rebuilt.

Of course, the seller will probably see it differently. At times, you can find significant non-running projects, that are priced not all that differently from worn drivers. At the very least, the buyer should assume the cost of an engine rebuild and restoration, on top of the cost of the donor car.

In Europe, the car is worth mas dinero.

 

It has a single distributor conversion, I bet there is a mess there.

Lowbody cars and Downdrafts have always been in the same price range.

Considering a "ready to drive" Downdraft just sold at RM for $110,000 you will be in way more than it's worth if you buy it for $70,000.

Yes they are and at $110K plus the $11K buyers premium it sold in its price range in this market.

As far as the 2 valve car being discussed here, I would say $50K is an appropriate sale price.

 

Not really.

There are 500 or so Downdrafts world wide and they can be brought in the US now with no issues.

There are only 150 LP400S Lowbody cars world wide but they are slower and are hard to fit in for tall guys but they have the best looks.

They both have fans for different reasons but have been valued about the same.

an S1 is worth more than a DD in Europe (last sales: 30% more)
an S2 i would say comparable to a DD

in US i think DD and S1 are much much closer given DD are still rare and no DD are going to US cheap at today's rate

This is not a 4.0 car, or at least the engine is not. It's only got one distributor. OK I see that Tony said they made a single setup.

 

Stay away at or anywhere near 70k.

 

I saw on another site a nice 5000 went in the $50s, needed some interior work and OE rims.


This car has been for sale a few months its way over priced IMO, maybe worth $40k

The CT market is very soft, it takes a special buyer to want one someone that wants a raw brutal car with no creature comforts, noisy and a firm ride, plus you need to be somewhat fit to get in and out of one and drive one, its not like some cushy California with huge doors and a big seat that some SL type guy would like, all the better for me as a CT suits me fine.

This car is gonna sit for quite awhile as the seller is not realistic, unless they get lucky with someone clueless.

I never said they'd take $40k they want $70k, $40k is all its worth IMO, I know of 2 others for sale that are nice cars around $70k.


The owners daughter is selling the car, he's in Mexico so want to make it clear what she told me they want so there's not a issue of people calling her up thinking they can buy it for $40k. Its tough enough to sell an exotic without dealing with this kind of stuff of who's real or not or low ball offers, she seemed like a nice girl though knows little about cars.

 

At 40K, it will still not make any financial sense, if the engine has to be rebuilt.

The cost of the mechanical restoration, does not leave enough funds for the cosmetic work, if you plan to avoid becoming financially upside down with this project.

 

Can you post the cars that you do know about that are for sale? Obviously not the contact info of the girl in mexico, but sounds like there are some other decent deals out there

I know of a 5000 a guy has over $69k in from just motor and trans work alone and the car still is not running needs more work, I think the estimates here should be doubled.
