    I'm having a great time tinkering with the 328 this summer. Currently in the process of a suspension/brake overhall. While waiting for the A-arms to get back from media-blasting, I pulled the calipers apart for a good cleaning. Pistons and bores looked great and new seals are now in. Does anyone know what the torque spec is for the hex bolts that secure the caliper support to the caliper cylinder body? (#11 in the figure below). Searched without success and no mention of this particular bolt in the WSM. They twisted free without much of a fight and had a stripe of what appears to be red loctite on them. Thanks in avance.

    The (ABS) 328 uses ATE calipers of exactly the same design as are in a B5 VW Passat. According to the (aftermarket) manual I have for that the caliper pins torque to 25NM (18ft/lbs). That's what I use on mine (front and rear).

    Give some thought to what kind of grease you use around them as well. Copper based stuff will work but I found some stuff called Permatex ultra brake caliper lube which (alledgedly) is better with/for the rubber guide boots. I've been using it for 3 or 4 years in there it seems to work OK. I used to find these start to stick about once a year (usually when a service was due) resulting in the brakes pulling the car one way or the other but have had less trouble since cleaning all the old ggrease out the boots & using the Permatex.

    Thanks Ian, that is very helpful. I found this website today: http://www.futek.com/boltcalc.aspx?mode=metric. Pluging in the data for the bolt size and mating material gave me a figure of 21 ft/lbs which is quite close to your figure of 18.

    Yr welcome. 18 or 21 is going to make no difference I think !. Besides one mans 18 ftlbs is quite likely the next mans 21ftlbs - depending on how accurate yr torque wrench is!

    I've never used thread lock on these but I don't suppose it would hurt.
