room is a bit bright some times, living room that is

not a big movie watcher, just need new tv
last one died some time ago, it was a 12 year old 60 in projection magnavox

maybe 1600 tops which is steep for me 1000 to 1200 would be a nice one
looking for something around 50ish

wait til the LED tv is under $2k if that's your max...it's worth every penny they're charging. Currently Samsung is the only major carrier with one as far as I know.

I am incredibly pleased with our new samsung rear projection. I dont know how big it is, but its the biggest one.

 

In general, 720 is indistinguishable from 1080p on screens that are SMALLER than 40". For screens LARGER than that, it is going to be a function of how far away from the TV you sit.

If you are looking for TVs in that 50" and up range, I would probably go w/ 1080p...

If you are looking for TVs between 40-50", then it is going to be a slightly more subjective decision...

 

Allow me to make a suggestion on the bright room issue. If the room has windows that will be reflected in the screen (in the background of the image you are watching) you should look for a matte finish instead of a gloss finish screen. The lcd, especially the led backlit lcd's come both ways. Sony models I have looked at (nearly all on sale, way down from their initial prices) could stand up to a bright room without undue reflections, Samsung could not. The Sharp led/lcd's are extremely expensive but look great in any room, bright or not. And remember — there are two types of led backlighting. One type uses side-firing white led's and the other type uses rgb back-firing led's. The latter has a wider gamut but costs more and has a slightly thicker case. In your price target, 40 inch models might be all you could find. If the size and style of dlp doesn't turn you off, you could probably reach your price target on much larger sets.

 

I agree 100% on the LED TV's. Just freaking AWESOME. I bought a cheap Vizio 1080p to hold me over until the LED's drop in price. Amazing contrast ratios and super thin.

I can't wait until the OLED tech goes mainstream!! Wild stuff coming down the line.

 

I'll second that on the Sony's. That's why my dad went with it. He loves his 52".

 

If it were me, I'd spend around $1600 for a 52" Samsung LCD. You might have to shop around a bit but they're worth it. Great picture.

 

My advise ... SAMSUNG ..LED ...any size you can afford!!!!!

DLP's are smokin' deals right now. If you have the room, I'd say go for it. I have one, and love it.

I bought a 42" Toshiba 1080p 240hz LCD earlier this week for our downstairs/kids TV. Less than $1000, and it looks GREAT.

If I could have anything, it would be the 50" Samsung LED. It's just amazing.

Currently at your budget, plasma is still the best way to go for picture quality. I have a 50" Panasonic plasma, and it is awesome (and the big windows next to the side do not impact the experience that much). As for all the talk about LED, even it was in your budget, I would be cautious just yet. It's still relatively new tech, and it isn't beating the plasmas by all the pro AV reviews. In the future I feel it certainly will be the choice to go to, and beyond that, OLED looks to smash everything.

i loved the picture quality and was shocked at the price and that it was 720p
one next to it was 1080p, same size and it looked like crap, so i guess as long as i get it properly hooked up it should be fine.
