Good write-up Ernie, and photos as well! I do happen to have a 22mm open end wrench so i may be in luck when it comes to do this!

    That's cool, especially since I only had a 7/8" O2 sensor socket instead of a 22mm one!

Ernie - Really cool of you to post this up! There were some other threads talking about other O2 sensors. Here's what I used... also plug and play with blue heat shielding over wiring. I recall they were about $85 each, so a bit cheaper. Work great so far!

PS - I destroyed one of the old ones trying to get it off of the old cat for reuse on my new Goth Cats. Tried propane torch, and no-go. Penetrant might help, but also may contaminate/ruin the sensor. So I just bought new ones.

    I didn't put the year. It's a normally aspirated 1993 Volvo 850, 2.4L 2435cc L5 FI (55) [engine code B5254F], uses the same 4 wire dual plug O2 sensor that our 348 uses.

The 512TR and Mondial T also uses the same O2 sensor.

    Nice Rick!

That's some more great info for those that may have trouble finding the Bosch sensors, or that wanna save some money.

If you are really a Stooge, you do not need to take anything off the car to get to the sensors. Just lay down on your stomach under the back end on each side and you can access the sensors. Also, if you have really snakey hands you can remove and install the 4-pronged plugs without removing the airbox. Having done this repeatedly, you develop a feel for what goes where. It's kind of like working in the dark. Close your eyes and image where everything goes. ;)

This thread is good news for the Three Junior Stooges (East Coast) as Junglistluder, Mesoscale, and myself will be installing my GOTH CATS within the next two weeks and can refer to this information to install. Thanks fellas, and long live the brotherhood!

Based on all the problems Ernie's had with his car, I've often wondered if the previous owner may have sported horns and tail. And now the car is starting to possess him! :D

    NO KIDDING!!!

My 348 has been the most unreliable car I have ever owned, ever. So why do I keep it? Because I have put so much time and effort and money into this thing I'll never get it back. That and, I keep hoping that it will FINALLY give in and just let my drive it! It would piss me off to no end if I sold it only to have the next owner rave on how reliable it has been.

I changed both of mine the other day but I decided to go with the Stooge method. I just reached in and loosened them with my wrench and removed them. I also crammed my arm up under the air box and unplugged the connectors without removing anything. It took me about 15 minutes to change both of them. ;)

If only 1 of the sensors goes bad, should you still change both regardless? Or is it okay to leave 1 new with 1 old?

The two 348 engine ECUs are *entirely* unconnected. They have *no* way of knowing what is going on in the other half of the engine.

So it doesn't matter to the left ECU if you've changed (or not) the O2 sensor on the right side, and vice-versa...meaning that it is OK to change only one or both at your discretion.

After the shamless self promoting face picture, I can finally visualize the mysterious voice on the phone that has called and helped me out a few times. :)

It's very funny to me that no one looks like they sound. LOL (not gonna say whether it's good or bad;))

great info Ernie. As for those of us who are relatively new to working on fcars, even the simple items spelled out in great detail and with pictures give us the confidence to try the harder stuff. Rock on!

I was debating on if I should post that or not, and figured why not. After all, it isn't the first picture of me on this place.
