Self Help Books?

How many of you out there read or have read any self help books? Do you find they have helped you becoming more successful?

I just picked up "Secrets of the Millionaire Mind" By T. Harv Eckr, and I'm really liking what
I've read so far. I also got "The One Minute Millionaire" for my birthday a while back, liked it, but not as much as Eckr's. And of course, The Secret (movie).

But the thing is, a lot of people I talk to are very skeptical about them, and, on one occasion even went off on a tangent about how much they didn't like them/thought they were "useless" and that I "don't need them".

So my question is, take them with a grain of salt, or dive headlong in?

 

Think and grow rich by Napoleon Hill. It is a book that I owe a LOT to. I read this book at the start of sophomore year. I'm not sure what it was but it genuinely did something to me, I went from a B/C average student to a straight A student who was accepted for transfer to Emory, Columbia and Duke. The motivation it seemed to turn on was incredible.

I recommend it to everyone, it is the greatest book I've ever read. I purchased it for 76 cents from half.com and I have no doubt that it has set me up to be very successful.

I honestly cannot praise the book enough, I'm not sure what it did to my brain but something just switched and it made me INCREDIBLY motivated.

I was pretty skeptical at first as well but this book is worth it's weight in platinum encrusted diamonds.

I'm actually about to buy the leather bound edition.

Just read the book and you will see what I mean.

 

Think and Grow Rich was the first book I read of this kind, and it did something very profound to me. I didn't recognize it at the time, but it played a major role in changing the direction of my life.

What I suggest as a follow up is "The Hidden Secret in Think and Grow Rich" by Brian Kim. (briankim.net)

Secrets of the Millionaire Mind is a great read. The spiritual values to creating abundance are blended in a way that most anyone can understand.

I highly suggest having "Don't Worry, Make Money" by Richard Carlson. It's almost like a table-top flip book; each chapter is a topic and only a page long.

Funny you should mention Think And Grow Rich, I got it as a birthday present not 20 minutes ago!

 

Speaking of Think and Grow Rich, there is a 'Updated 21st Century' Edition. Is it worth looking at or stick to the original?

 

Is that the one with the commentry and another guy telling what he things the big secret to be?

I've heard about it, but I picked up a pretty standard copy (new publication) for my girlfriend.

 

I believe what you're referring to is what TGood suggested above, 'The Hidden Secret in Think and Grow Rich'.

I'm going up to the book store today so I'll take a closer look.

I think most self help books are BS. I must say that I found this one very good. I have been actual using the principles in this book for a long time before I read it. I know a lot of folks on here don't like this book but I have found it very helpful.

I'm in the process of reading the 21st century edition, having never read the original. If you've read the original, you won't get anything new out of the new one.

It seems like some modern-day examples have been added..........like Gates, FedEx, etc., to make it more relevant to people who may not have heard too much about Carnegie and Morgan. I don't believe anything from the original was removed.

Absolutely LOVE this book! Although not everyone would like the lifestyle he lives, realizing how much time I was wasting was scary.

 

I have been doing the 4 hour work week thing for the last 20 years. But with this book I saved a lot more time. I now work 2 days a week with the 4 business I run.

I saw that one on the shelf at B&N. I'll have to add it to my list.

Thanks. That's what I figured, so I picked up the 21st Century version. Also got one for my friends birthday. He seemed pretty happy about it.

 

Stick with the original think and grow rich. No point reading something by some other guy.
