    1) What's the correct way of checking the oil level?

The manual says to check the oil IMMEDIATELY after turning the engine off.
However, there's a sticker in the engine bay which states that the oil level should be checked with the engine idling!
The two different methods show a +/- 30% difference in readings.
    Which is the correct method??

    2) What is the difference between MAX and MIN?

The quick guide says it's 2 liters.
    The full-length manual says it's 1.5 liters!

    3) Is there a warning signal which come up when the oil level is approaching the minimum?

    Thanks in advance,
    Carlo

I previously used the Italian user manual.

I just remembered that I also have the English version of the user manual in PDF.

They suggest YET ANOTHER method (as shown in the attached screen shot).

    Unbelievable.

    Can someone enlighten me

P.S. If there's one thing I miss of our old Porsche 911, it's the electronic engine oil-level check...

Don't the modern Ferraris (430, 599, and 612) have an oil level sensor which will trigger a warning on the display?

    Good question.

I looked in the user manual and there doesn't seem to be any "check engine oil" warning.

There's even a "rain sensor malfunctioning" warning...but nothing regarding the oil level apparently.

The procedures in your second post are the new ones issued by Ferrari after they found many cars were being overfilled resulting in Oil coming out through the breathers into the inlet tract and draining via the MAF and soaking the air filter, ultimately draining to the air vent in the side of the wing and then down the inside of the rear of the front wheel arch

You're right! The 612 doesn't have an engine oil level warning either. It does have a transmission oil level warning, but not engine oil.

Mine has the old, less-specific, instructions on checking the oil-- or is the 612 less fussy? I'm guessing it's not, since my 456 needed a similar (if undocumented) procedure for accurately checking the oil.

My book for a late 2008 599 is different again.
It must be wrong because i picked up the car two days ago and checked the oil yesterday as per manual and it was below min. on the dipstick?

It had just had a 190 check, for the 2 year warranty so it should be right. The Dealer was closed yesterday, but will be on the phone today. If the book is wrong, I would expect the dealer to have show me the correct way to test the oil.

The book also says I should only use Shell Helix Ultra 10W-60 engine oil for topping up, but this seems different from some of the things i have read on the internet this morning, is this the right oil? I hope so as I have just ordered 2L.
I will ask about the additive as well while I am on the phone to them.
    Thanks

This is correct, and it's expensive to fix too. I had a main dealer overfill. I'm told the change needs to be done with the engine very hot.

    Thanks Mark and John.
looks like I will have to move to the country to test the oil level then, as I don't think next door will too happy if I Rev the car to 4500 rpm for 1 min. on a Sunday morning!

Would it not be a simple job to redesign of the dipstick marks sort this out, if they are being over filled? Certainly the owners manual should be replaced with the correct procedure at the very least.

Dealer told me something different today!!!
3000 rpm for 2 min. idle for 2 min. check oil with engine running.
At least the oil i ordered is right, he said.

Reading the posts about checking the oil, and what is the minimum, besides warning lights and oil gauges in cars, why have the auto manufacturers not (to my knowledge), ever installed low oil switches like my Honda generators have on them? If they are too low on oil , the generator will not start, if they are running, and the oil level gets too low, they will shut down, to prevent damage to the engine. It couldn't be that hard to engineer such a feature into today's high tech cars, and as far as shutting the car down, if you are driving in traffic, have some type of audible voice, to perhaps give you a 60 second warning to engine shutdown. Guess the auto companies would rather you damage/hand grenade the motor, more profit for them!

    10W-60 is correct.
The method instructed by your dealer is the same recommended by mine.

In any case, in 70,000km I never had to add oil. The car barely uses any. Doing 20,000km from service to service was never an issue.

Seems to be dry sump so should check it while running.
Did this procedure on mine and it read close to MIN. Put in 1 litre, now it reads close to Max using this same procedure.

You should be careful about getting it close to MAX. If you run the car hard, the oil expands as temperatures rise...

I was told to leave it around the middle between MIN and MAX.

    Good to know, thanks.
On my TVR, which is also dry sump, it is best to keep it at MAX this way but obviously the F599 is different.
