There's a very chilling photo in that thread I linked to that was published in the Sept 1994 Wheels magazine taken just moments before the impact that shows the two course workers trying to avoid being hit. :(

I'm sort of surprised that a magazine would even print that, so I'll leave it for others to find over there if they care.

What are the odds of losing control just where marshals and 2 cars are parked ? So sad.

They were killed because there heads hit each other and they weren't wearing helmets. If they had on helmets they very well could be alive today.

    It was very sad :(

High. There was nothing else solid from the road to the horizon - target fixation from an inexperienced driver was the result.
If they had done any advanced driver training prior to the event they would still be alive - as would the two course workers they hit :(

I recorded an hourlong documentary from TV from that event many years ago. Still have the tape somewhere.

It followed the cars, but especially the F40, and showed some highspeed runs.

Keith Pritchard, 31 an accredited racing-car driver and official in the world's first legal Cannonball Run, was a worried man a few days before the event in early 1994.

He told his parents that Japanese entrant Akihiro Kabe a millionaire dentist from Tokyo was absolutely crazy and was going to kill somebody according to P. mother.

As he was coming into a checkpoint 150 km south of Alice Springs, Kabe's Ferrari spun out of control and into an official car, killing himself and 3 others, incl. the man who had predicted tragedy, Keith Pritchard.

Read on several sites that Kabe have raced before in closed circiuts, but was largerly inexperienced.

Actually - the impact wasn't particularly high-speed, there were some mitigating circumstances to it - I've spoken to one the wrench-monkeys for some of the other cars, who happened to be having drinks with the Jap fellas the night before, and has some inside info on the actual circumstances...

Once I collate the data properly (guy doesn't use a computer) I'll post it up - but there's definitely more to the story.
