Which ROLEX would you choose......?

?

So what should I do......?

  1. 18K gold.....cool watch, not gaudy like a Diamond President.

  2. Two tone.......cool watch, low key is better.

  3. Something else, Rolex's are for posers.......

I want to buy a used Rolex..........price not withstanding.........I prefer the 18K Submariner over the two tone model, but having seen a ton of the 18K ones for sale, and very few of the other ones, I am wondering if it is too blingy, and kinda out of style, thus many for sale ? Blue face and bezel of course.

Both are nice, but I really like the 18K watch. FWIW used "asking" prices are between $5-7K for two tone, versus $10-12K for 18K.

Looks like a $25 Timex if you ask me. No offence if you are wearing one bud, but it's not my taste.

Anything with gold looks tacky IMO (nothing personal). I had a Blue/red bezeled GMT and got annoyed by other dudes noticing the watch and wanting to talk watches with me. Never saw one women notice or ask about it.

A blue face without the gold looks good to me.

Look, get a brand new Two-Tone Sub. There is nothing like having a brand new one, and it will eventually be worth more than you paid for it (if this helps to justify it).

I have an all-steel rolex datejust with oyster bracelet, smooth bezel, and lightly-brushed silver face, bought it about 20 years ago.

It's very conservative by today's standards, a beautifully made watch, and keeps as good time as any quartz I've had, but I still feel self-conscious about wearing it.

Most of those 20 years have been spent in the drawer.

To each his own...it's what YOU like. We have bought several Rolexes as bonuses for employees that collect them. I don't have one - I just have a basic stainless Breitling Supermarine that I actually dive with. It tells me what day of the week it is, which seems to be more important to me as years and beers pass by. I got it before they were popular with anyone but aviators and Secret Agent Quiller. As far as women go, the RIGHT kind of women comment on how they like it.

I'm kind of retro (OK, I'm a mechanical engineer by training) and I think it goes well with my Kimber 1911 carry gun and my Zippo lighter...

I don't talk watches with anyone - I just got what made me happy, and my two cents is don't worry what anyone else thinks - blingy or whatever. But I'm sure my advice is worth exactly what you paid for it!

    Best regards,
    Eric

I have a nice little Rolex collection.

IMHO the 18k blue sub is a summer time watch. Looks killer in summer, but out of place the rest of the year. ( I have a TT blue sub I wear in summer)

Have you thought about a white or black face SS Daytona. It's the #1 Rolex, and prices are down a bit for the first time I can recall.

http://www.rolexforums.com is a great place to ask questions as well.

These threads always drive me nuts.....what car should I buy, what color, what sort of woman should I marry? Its all personal preference and has NOTHING to do with what ANYONE else thinks. Buy, drive, eat and wear what ever you want....... Did you obtain the money to buy a Rolex or a Ferrari by letting others make every decision for you?

Got my first Rolex at 15. Since then, I have not looked back and have quite the collection.

I am a big fan of the Submariner line and find myself wearing the SS models frequently.

Also, to the best of my knowledge, the secondary market has always been strong for these watches.

    Buy and enjoy!

Just a difference in opinion from a watch collector...

Why Rolex? In that price range you can get much better and unique pieces than a Rolex.

Take a look at a Graham Swordfish, Edox Jump Hour (Dubai Edition - just released and very cool), Ulysse Nardin, IWC Big Pilot, B&R BR02, etc. There are many watches that are so much more unique than a Rolex.

Nothing against Rolex's - I had a few over the years and they are great watches, just became so common place in that everyone that can afford a decent watch has one and the market is riddled with replicas, any time I see one, I nearly always assume fake until I can get a close look.

    Just a difference of opinion.

If you do go with a Rolex - get a black dial and black bezel or get one and send it to get customized with a phantom dial or custom bezel, they have some cool options to make it unique. I would stay away from the gold bling rolex's.

    neither

there are 1000's of better choices in that price point. if you are going to spend a little on a watch do some research and buy something that you really like.

your watch needs to represent you. those gold rolex's represent the guy driving that faux 599 a few posts up

Happily married thanks, and if a woman was looking at my watch she'd miss all the good stuff it is attached to.

Sorry, but I disagree.......used ones today are 1/2 price +/- of new ones. 18K ones are as well. Deflation is here to stay for decades........inflation is dead.

Thanks, but not really my style.

Why is that ? Just curious.

We all do to some extent. Human nature........

Virtually "EVERYONE" up here in Calgary has either a Stainless Steel Daytona, Submariner or GMT Master.......kinda like the idea of a two tone Daytona with a blue face though.....but I can get the 18K Sub for the same $$.

Kinda like a F-1 versus 6 speed thread eh ? Others opinions count to everyone, like I said before, it's human nature.

Don't get me wrong. I appreciate and understand the elegant simplicity of the thin Patek's and Piaget's etc.........I just can't mentally get my head around the price versus look/feel factor. There is something about wearing a hunk of metal that is pulling your medial deltoid out of shape that appeals to me. Good comeback !!

And you could buy either of a Lambo, a Zonda, or a Paganai, et al, and it still would not be a Ferrari. Not disparaging the other watches either.

Cartier are not my style and I've worn an AP Royal Oak on loan.....it's a kind of Submariner wanna be IMHO.

Thank you to everyone for their comments.........most insightful to date.

I love the two tone sub, with the old blue face. The new one that just came out isn't as pretty IMO.

Did you look at the SS GMT II? Very cool watch, and I like the polished look...love mine.

From what I understand, the SS models depreciate the least, the TT next, and solid gold the most...

I love the SS...understated enough that you can wear it 24/7... except in front of clients/patients... :)

You don't like the Daytona? Pretty neat watch for your price range...

I like the Daytona's.......just can't find a used 2 tone one with a blue face.......

    Ike....

What is the difference ? The shade of the blue face ?

Gonna go for a used 18K solid gold Submariner........

Since you are asking for opinions; I like Rolex watches and have two of them, an Explorer II (white face) and a GMT Master II (black face). They are both all stainless steel. I wear them because they very well made, keep very accurate time and they are almost indestructable, but only if they are made of stainless. The other metals are too soft and are out of place on these watches. If you want a dress watch get an all-gold Swiss automatic. If it's about a Rolex sport watch doing what it is designed to do, all stainless is the way to go.
