We are in process of rebuilding the engine in my GTC s/n 9593. New pistons, rings, rods.....lots of new pieces for its 1st ever rebuild.

My question is that the block, head and manifolds have a silver paint. What would u recommend to match the color and lustre of the original?

    thanks in advance

I don't remember the brand but we used a high heat silver from the auto parts store that was more matte than shiny. Once it is in the car a lot of the silver disappears. I had the same question before my engine was rebuilt but the answer from an old time restorer was don't overthink it. It is not one of the important issues.

Consider Harley Davidson high-heat silver; reasonable match for color and brightness, and the silver does not come off on your hand like some silver paints do; I think Bill Hirsch has a good option also if you contact them.

Wrinkled, but just right, if you expect to be judged then you should consider sending then to a pro who knows what the correct wrinkle is. Otherwise see the thread on Tom Yang on wrinkle paints and application

Good point. The only thinking I had to do was call Patrick Otis who is doing the bottom end work. Patrick said Bill Hirsch's engine paint is what he recommended.....just as Lancia pointed out in his post.

thanks guys......can't wait to get my revitalized GTC back on the road!!

eastwoods aluma blast is one of the best well matched paints as its not glossy like most silvers and etches into aluminum really well.

I have had the Harley Davidson aluminum shot bead paint recommended. For wrinkle paint -- I sent my heat shields to Gary Bobileff. I also had a friend send his valve covers to Gary. You can save some with Gary by stripping them yourself--I used aircraft paint sripper (made for aluminum).

Are you painting inside you engine?
I know this sounds nuts but when my Daytona engine was striped down recently it had green aircraft type paint on the alli inside of the engine.

Anyone know if it needs to be done if so with what type of paint?

I believe it is zinc chromate that was used on the inside of the engine. From what I understand all inside surfaces are to be coated......with the obvious exception of the combustion areas. I believe there is a newer more modern type of paint, but I will have to talk to my shop to find out what it is.

Yes, Ferrari used zinc chromate primer to coat the surfaces of the castings internal to the engine to seal the casting and the same zinc chromate is the primer for the silver (or wrinkle finish) external finish. Inspecting original castings, it appears that, at least for some pieces, the entire piece was primed and then machined, as the line between the primer and machined surfaces is too exact, even from masking (as in your photo of the timing case). I also speculate that the engine castings may have been assembled without gaskets and internals for the purpose of painting the exterior (self-masking) and then taken apart for real assembly. It must be the reason that you find (and see in original photos) silver paint on the ends of the exposed studs, but no paint on any of the hardware or gaskets. It would have saved the need to mask individual pieces. Just a theory from observation.
