I pulled the trunk carpet out of my 73 Dino today (#06618) and noticed on the carpet piece directly behind the firewall was the number 6602 scrawled in white. I believe my carpets are original to the car as it rolled out of the factory (the firewall panel on mine hasn't even been unscrewed before!). Chassis #06602 would have been 8 cars in front of mine on the assembly line. With the chassis numbers so close I wonder if they just got mixed up that day.

Anyone else with original carpet noticed this? See attached photos.

    Hello Ryan,

normally they used the body no. identify parts to a certain chassis no.
    First time I see this.
One example for the body no. painted on parts (inside the front bonnet), see attached picture
    (246 GTS #06830, body no. 2238)

    regards Matthias

I'm wondering if the interior was actually fitted at the Ferrari factory after the body/chassis was completed. That might explain why a chassis # was written on the carpets as opposed a body number.

For instance, in the book Inside Ferrari by Michael Dregni on p78:

"By 1970, Ferrari had consolidated most of its work within the family of Scaglietti and Pininfarina. The chassis framework was built by Vaccari on the northern side of Modena. Next the chassis was transferred across the city to Scaglietti, which constructed the body and painted it, and then moved the chassis-body on a rolling jig to a finishing room where the electrics were fitted. From there the cars were trailed to Maranello where interiors were appointed, the engine was dropped in, the driveline was connected and the car was finished."

Also on p79 there is a photo by Hillary Raab, Jr. that shows Dinos in various states at Carrozzeria Scaglietti in 1969 where "Dino at the right, complete with trim, bumpers, glass, and wheels and tires." Definitely not conclusive one way or another, but interesting to note.

I'm really curious to find another Dino with original trunk carpets to see if any markings are on the back of any of the pieces.

with the early Dinos (206 GT / L-serie) the body no. was written on interior stuff like backside of the door cover, backside of the dashboard or retaining strap of the seats.

I have markings on the back of my trunk carpet, yet they aren't as visable as yours an hard to read, but they are definitely there.

Do the numbers match your body number or chassis number? Interesting.
