Uses for your old timing belts

I think somebody put my oil filter on my Triumph with an impact wrench. None of my filter wrenches could get it off and not wanting to purchase another...a quick modification was required.

I cut the timing belt to length and lined the wrench to get the tenacious filter off.

Which got me to thinking...what have y'all done with these things that torment us so??

you need to patend that idea

 

See what you've gone and done? Now you have to perform a service on your oil filter wrench every three years, even if you don't even use it. Actually not using it will be worse. I know, I know, some say you can wait for five years, but why risk it? Also be sure to replace the pivot pins when you change the belt sections.

 

That is flat-out hilarious.

Of course, if you do 'push' the time limit and it breaks - which it will - the pivot pins will fall out and go directly into your crankcase.

I used an old pair for hanging skiis. I've never changed them since and it's been way over a decade. Does this mean my skiis will blow up?

 

Great idea on the filter wrench!

Now, we need to figure out a similar recycling idea for tires.....THAT will be huge......(Tires can not be melted down like plastic to recycle into other stuff)

What can we wrap an old tire around or in?

Would you trust a filter wrench belt changed by a home mechanic, or would you insist that it have been done by a filter wrench specialist? Personally, I'd evaluate the seller to get an idea of his degree of competence and go from there.

 

Since the filter wrench will be used on a Triumph you can probably get away with using a belt which does NOT have the Ferrari horse printed on it ........... otherwise I'd get the original cause they are totally different belts.

My cats wouldn't go for timing-belt collars.

I don't remember if I kept the old belts after the major; the tensioner bearings make good paperweights.

 

Does anyone know this filter wrench? Owner says he changed the belts recently but I see no evidence of it?

I use my 20 year old belts as a connector between the crank and the cams, to turn the cams.

Is that ok?

We used to cut up our old (rock) climbing ropes and weave them into throw rugs. If you get enough belts together, you may be able to weave them into a nice doormat
