    Hey everyone,

It has been a dream of mine to become an architect. I have a background in Software Engineering and have wanted to pursue architecture for the last 2 years. I have made a portfolio and applied to the Carleton architecture program (In Canada) for admission for this fall. Unfortunately I did not make it.

Truth be told I did not try very hard, however I am preparing a new portfolio for admission for next year and since there are quite a few architects on here (and I am assuming a few industrial design and architecture students) I would love to get some tips and ideas on how to make a positive impression on the admission boards.

    Thanks!
    Walid.

Are you applying to an undergraduate program or a graduate program structured for those with an undergrad degree in something else?

Are you starting at first-year level, or attempting to place out of some basic design courses?

If you're going through the whole program, freshman-on, I wouldn't think you'd need a portfolio to be admitted unless it's a highly selective school.

First two or three years of undergraduate arch programs are strenuous, designed to thin out the herd considerably.

I am planning on starting over from first year. Every single university that I have looked into has required a portfolio. Keep in mind this is in Canada and might be slightly different in other places.

    That could well be.

I started architecture school 35 yrs ago and in Texas, much may have changed in the USA also.

I'd suggest making an appointment with an admissions officer at every school you are applying to. Let each officer know ahead of time that you specifically wish to see what they consider to be admission-quality portfolio work.

Then, I would seek out students in the programs and ask them to discuss their own experiences with you, and show you the porfolios that got them admitted.

Also remember that your personal first impression says as much as your portfolio and past academic work.
