I recently bought a copy of "Up to Speed: the Roycroft Years in New Zealand Racing" ( by Scott Thomson) and I found a colour picture of the green P.Whitehead's 125 #4 (0114) at NZGP 1954 (during the same yead the car was sold to Dick Cobden).

According my information, this car at the beginning was red and Whitehead re-painted it with British racing green during 1951 season ( before Swiss GP?????).

From the other side, I found in one thread that on the front page"Australia motor racing yearbook" issue n.5 there is a pic showing the red Cobden' Ferrari #49; unfortunately I didn't succeeded in buying one copy.

Can anyone confirm the existence of the picture showing the red Ferrari driven by Cobden and the first entrance of Whitehead's green 0114?

Have reports that #0114 was green, but neither a proof for that nor a date.

For sure the car was red on the first entries with P.Whitehead then he re-painted it. I ignore why and when

Any australian friend can confirm the information concerning the D.Cobden's pic?

Probably I have made a mistake to use the sentence "for sure..." since I remember to have read this information in one article or book but up to now I am not able to find out where.

The 0114, he bought on the end of 1950, was the ex 125-C-01 (for sure red). The question is the following: did he paint it with dark green immediately or during the 1951 season? ( as my memory suggest - anyway I will try to find the source of this information).

The previous Whitehead's Ferrari, the 125- 010C, was red (I am not sure Dobson kept the same colour after buying it from Whitehead): for this reason the information regarding the 0114 red coloured (during first 1951 races) didn't sound strange to me.

Michael, do you know is the information concerning the colour of Cobden's #49 Ferrari is correct?

It was rebodied, so the old paint is no argument.

Or not at all but only much later? As long as I have no 1st category sources like i.e. period color pictures, or period race reports handling the color, I leave this point open. As for secondary or even tertiary sources - take the "green" Folland car....

No question, because it was never officially imported to GB, only on carnet basis, sometimes under "Scuderia Ferrari", but later regularly under the "Scuderia Ambrosiana" banner.

    Sorry, not my playground.

We have wonderful quality Kodachrome colour movie footage of Whitehead's first Ferrari making its appearance in the Jersey Road Race of 1949 - absolutely in rosso corsa. All the colour footage and colour stills that we have of his second Ferrari - 0114 - as far as I can recall without reviewing it all, show it in green. This does not mean it was not red early in his tenure, but just that it certainly ran in green later in 1951 et seq. This is the car which of course ended-up with Chevrolet V8 power in Australia, before being retrieved by Tom Wheatcroft as the founding F1 car in what became The Donington Collection - now, sadly, being progressively broken up and distributed to the four winds...

would say it was painted red when Dick bought it in 1954 and raced it at the Bathurst Easter meeting.
