Not Pleased with Porsche..

    So..Engine Changed.


    If you guys remember, my 997 C4S had ticlkling noise from engine and blackened exhaust tips from oil being spat from the exhaust (see here : http://ferrarichat.com/forum/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=138648950 ).

    After a few dealer visits, they finally admitted it was serious ( I had been told before " Dont worry, the noise isnt that obnoxious, you can drive it like that...) and took the car in. And let me know it needed a new engine as a few of you had forecasted. Good thing internet. I had read about similar pbs on other boards.

    #6 Cyl Wall was damaged.


    No Loaner.
    Exhaust tip is still filthy.
    No commercial gesture.
    And i suspect they forgot to connect the exhausts valves as even when i press the sport button, the car sounds like boxster.

    So i need to drop the car again...

    Oh, they gave me an inspection report, where they show that everything is OK. Even my tyres. Back in February, with 4k miles less, another P dealer told me that my rear tyres would be dead in a less than 2k miles.


    I cant say im impressed with Porsche right now.

    I wonder if it just your dealer or if it is usual?

    find out who the regional service/technical manager is and plead your case to him. I know the BMW and Mercedes regional guys are in metro Chicago, would assume the same for Porsche. If your dealer won't supply that info, call PNA in Atlanta.

    A regional manager should have the authority and concern to make things right, regardless of how incompetent or apathetic the dealer is. If that doesn't work keep moving up the food chain.

    I have always had excellent service from Napleton Porsche........who are you dealing with ?

    Try going back and talking to the service manager, and if that fails, ask for the dealership GM, then the dealer principal.

    Send a few nice e-mails to the President/CEO of Porsche Germany, then send a few nice e-mails to Porsche CEO of North America, then send a nice e-mails to the GM of the Porsche Dealership. Last send a e-mail to the slob you are dealing with and just say "Look out below!". Boom! :D

    I switched to the other big dealer ( i dont want to name it until this issue is resolved or not..). Car was bought at Napleton but they werent very helpful with my questions right after i got the car and i had a burnt smell coming from the engine for several thousand miles nor when the muffler had a metallic tickling noise so i decided to try the next dealer.

    Realisticly, what can i expect from them? An extension of warranty ? Free service for the next time ? Or nothing at all ?

    In my business,when we screw something over, we offer a client a credit for the same amout of their purchase.

    Im not sure how a Porsche with a changed engine is perceived in the market place.

    A new engine is not a big deal on a 996 or 997.........no one will really care, and those that say they do, aren't educated buyers in the first place.

    You won't get a warranty extension or anything else quite frankly, there's no legal precedent for it. Dealer performed parts and service work are covered for 24 months unlimited mileage, or the balance of the new car warranty, whichever is greater. Having said that, they should have did the little stuff they obviously missed on the first visit. You can ***** about that and hope it gets rectified promptly.

    The reason they swapped out the engine was probably becasue it was cheaper to R/R it than disassemble and repair it. Also, they will send it back to PCNA and/or PAG for a teardown to analyze what went wrong. A pretty common approach nowadays.

    It wasn't that long ago that every Porsche knew how to and had torn down and engine. I wonder how many now have even done a valve job?

    To your point, it's cheaper to just swap the "lump."

    I replaced a Cayenne engine this July. A Porsche rebuilt was less than what a wrecking yard wanted for a used engine! To rebuild it the machining and parts would have been more. IMO Porsche is having so many engines go south they have to offer a relatively cheap replacement to keep them on the road.

    Kind of makes Ferrari engines appear to be as reliable as Mercedes 123 chassis 300D's.....

    Wow, thats a letdown.

    Anyway, when you say balance of the new car warranty, whichever is greater , the engine is under warranty for 24 months from now on ( my warranty expires in nov 2009 ).

    I cant imagine if this issue would have occured in 3 months.

    Oooops, seems I was sorta right "and" sorta wrong.......you had better negotiate with them over this if you plan to keep the car.

    Seems they have a disclaimer on their site. I'd ask for a CPO warranty to be thrown in, knowing that they'll say no, and thru negotiation, you back down on your initial demand, and ask that you at least be allowed to purchase the CPO warranty at a discounted price, if they won't include it for free. Which I think they may very well do if you involve the area service rep from PCNA.

    I had an early 997S and at about 400 miles the Check Engine Light came on. I took the car to the dealer and they gave me a C4S Cabriolet for a loner while they checked codes on the car. It showed a different code every time they checked. They said the Porsche rep from Germany was due at the dealership in less than a week, and would I mind waiting for his diagnosis? I agreed and they said bring the loner back before it turned 3,000 miles and they would exchange it for another. In the meantime, gasoline would be free if I would bring it to them for fill ups. When the factory rep arrived he chewed them out for making me wait and got on the phone to Germany and had a complete engine air-shipped in the very next day. And when I say complete, I mean complete. The engine included everything except for the coolant in the radiator. I got a new air conditioner, all new belts, air cleaner, starter, exhaust manifolds, mufflers, exhaust tips and everything that hangs on the engine, including new motor mounts. It was a crated, complete replacement, just add coolant. It took only a day and a half to install and run in. There was no burnt oil smell, no leaks, no fuss, no bother. And my loner (two cars in all) were kept clean and full of gasoline. The dealer was very accommodating and the factory was even better. I'd say your dealer is the demon in this situation, not Porsche.

    I droped the car again on monday so they could check why the exhaust was so quiet. I asked how long do they think it will take, they said they didnt know and would have to look and would let me know.

    I called yesterday to check what was going on. They said they had to order a part for the muffler ( but couldn't tell me precisely which ) and the part had just arrived (in the morning).
    and the car could be ready by end of day or today.

    I haven't heard back since.

    Slight improvement, they did drop me back at my office on Monday.

    Sorry to hear of your hassle Andrew. I have a few friends with similar experiences in HK and it gets boring pretty quickly. I didn't have any problems with my 997's luckily but I did not keep them very long. I am super much enjoying going back to air cooled. 993RS is a simply fantastic road car. Also bought a 993 3.8 Cab which is really big fun. So far zero problems

    Funny you say this, this morning on way to work i followed a 993 C2 and was thinking maybe i should sell the 997 and get a 993.

    993 RS are so gorgeous. Is it not to harsh for the road?

    993RS is fantastic on the road. Even better than my 997GT3RS. I changed to KW 3 way fast road dampers and they are simply amazing. Also changed bushings from rubber to powerflex - should be harsher but is not.

    The simple dead stock 993 3.8 auto Cabrio is a really engaging car. Enjoy it much more than the 997 4S.

    I also got a new engine for my Cayenne S when one of the cylinder walls got damaged. I found out after I started hearing a slight ticking sound. At any rate, the dealer got an engine from Germany in one day and then got my car back with a brand new engine two days after receiving the engine. Interestingly enough, my combined city/highway driving fuel consumption with the new engine is now an average of 19.7 mpg - positively surprising to me...

    Besides the dealer (Barrier Porsche), PCNA has been very accommodating as well. They've authorized a whole new airbag assembly to replace one of my Cayenne tiptronic switches, which is part of the whole assembly. As some of you may know, airbag replacement is not normally part of the warranty. At another time, they've been very helpful in getting history and importation paperwork promptly on an old race car I imported from Canada.

    Perhaps, if you have not done so, elevating your issue beyond the service writer may help...
