    Correct Jim.

The early P400 had wood rims, with the spokes done in the 'strake' design. However, it should be noted that some of the early P400 randomly had the wood rim covered in vinyl or leather as with 3216 (which is 100% original with 1,900 miles from new).

Later in P400 production they went to leather rims with the spokes done in the classic 'swiss cheese' design. I think the switch to this type of steering wheel is purely coincidental to the stiffening of the chassis, although some might argue that both were a function of safety improvements.

From late P400 onwards, one wheel was used with varying applications to the rim (leather or vinyl) and with some of the late P400 and early S having a curious seamed & stitched panel at the point where the spokes meet the rim.

I certainly know there are those that would want to keep the equipment on the car for old-time's sake, but my personal rule of thumb is that any EPA/DOT-specific stuff tends to look and function best if it's stored in a box away from the car. If I ever restore my SV, I'll probably peel the rest of what's left off and put it on the shelf.

That said, I do wish I still had my smog pump (in a box, of course), for old-time's sake. Although I can't imagine where it was bolted on. Anyone have a picture?

    Hi there,

The guy in the pink shirt that is walking besides the green Miura is our dear friend and Lamborghini historian Marcel de Lange, who unfortunatly passed away almost three years ago. I would really appreciate it if you could PM me and sent me this picture on high resolution, means a lot to me.

    Grazie e Ciao!
    Marcello

Somewhat off topic: Joe, I saw your book in the Evo Essentials section of the current Evo magazine (Issue 135, p31). Good to see you getting some much deserved press.
