I've got an Xbox 360 hooked up to a 54ish" TV that probably weighs a ton and is about three feet deep. I'm looking to move it into the other room and take advantage of the HDMI the system can do. In the other room I've got:

42" Sharp 1080p Widescreen Mounted on the wall
5.1 Surround Sound (4 bose shelf speakers, 1 bose center and a klipsich subwoofer I believe 14")
Yamaha Natural Sound DVD player DV-s5750
Yamaha Natural Sound AV reciever HTR-5830

Now all this was bought for my fathers 50th birthday, by my mother who has absolutely no idea what a DVD player is. She pretty much walked into Best Buy and loaded up the CC.

Originally we got the Geek Squad to set it up because we couldn't understand it. The guy set everything up in an hour and its all working perfectly. Trying to save myself the outrageous fees of the Geeks, I've come here. I'm really hoping I don't need to connect the cables to the TV because I really can't take that damn thing off the wall. I tried hooking the HDMI cables of the 360 into the reciever and played around with it a bit but it didn't work.

If you need pics of the back of the system or anything just ask.

    Thanks!

If all your component are running through your Yamaha AV reciever with just a Video-Out going into the TV, then you just plug all the X-Box stuff into the reciever. Switch the imput on the reciever to whatever you plugged it into, and it will show up on the tv.

This won't work if the geek hooked up all the components to the tv, with just an Audio-Out going to the reciever. In this case, you have to plug it into the back of the tv.

Can you get me a picture of the back of the receiver w/ everything still plugged in? That picture should be enough to get us started... Also, do you have an exact model number of the TV?

Ok... so the Yamaha HTR-5830 does not have HDMI capability, so you are going to have to go two routes:

Assuming the TV has HDMI, you will have to plug the HDMI from the XBOX into a free HDMI port on the TV. Then for audio there is two ways to do that:

    1) If the TV has an audio out already hooked up to the HTR then you should not need to do anything further.

    2) You can plug another audio cable (I'm not sure what type is available on your XBOX) from your XBOX into the back of the HTR. You will then need to switch the inputs on both the TV AND the HTR so that you can get your picture and sounds on that system.

Sadly, You aren't going to be able to take advantage of the HDMI without plugging in to your TV...

I use the VGA connector + TosLink cable for my Xbox360. Works great. I connect the TosLink to my AV receiver and the VGA cable to my HDTV. No problems at all.
