Can I play a game that calls for 2.4Ghz on 2.0Ghz machine?

My kid just bought a PC game that calls for a 2.4 machine, our home box is a 2.0. Hate for him to open the box if it won't work.

It all depends... what is the game? MIGHT work just fine, might not. Also
there will be graphics capabilities involved as well that are not involved in the processor
speed - older machines may not have enough graphic processing poop to make
it work right without 'lag' and 'jaggies' around objects, or lag in game play.

The game is Fallout 3, and I'm guessing our poor old box won't keep up. Also figured out it's a 1.8Ghz machine.

I think I'm going to tell him to go get his money back......

 

It will run...just really slow.

 

Chances are good that Fallout 3 is not going to be playable on the machine that you have... like furious_ferrari said it might 'run', but whether it will be "playable" is another question entirely...

 

There's so much to Fallout 3, lots a fast action, detail, etc.. the more processing power you have the better off you will be. Not enough & you will be wasting your money. I've been playing it on the PS3 which Bethesda Softworks made quite a few sacrifices from what I understand. Excellent game but problem is the the processor bar keeps being raised & some gamers can't afford to keep up. Makes me wonder what type of processor it's going to take to run Id Software's new game engine for RAGE.

Turn all your graphics down and you'll be fine. I play CS:Source on a computer running at Intel 1.6 and a 5700 Nvidia with 1gig of ram.

Easiest way to find out if you 'can run it', is to visit the link and put in the game you want to play.

It will tell you if your system meets the minimum requirements for the game to operate.

love Fallout3. have TONS OF MODS , and all of the expansions so far.

i just received Darkest of Days, and just finished Wolfenstien.

i would go to newegg.com, and see if you can upgrade anything on the pc, without spending a fortune. i built my machine for around $800.00 2 videocards, 16 gigs of ram, AMD 6400+ black with overclocking and extra cooling. i am running xp64, and love it.

You can certainly turn down the graphics to make it play better, but it won't look as good. And Fallout 3 at full graphics eye candy can make a 4Ghz machine with dual graphics card crawl.

 

Assuming that means turn the graphics down in the game itself? In the settings maybe?

My kid used the srtest website below, and analyzed our computer against the requirements of the game itself. It passed everything except the video card, and just barely failed there. He couldn't stand it any more and opened the package and loaded it anyway. Hope he didn't just waste his $50, I warned him as much as I could.

He's already beat Fallout on the PS3, numerous times, but heard that the PC version had add-ons and upgrades that he couldn't live without.

Scares me that a 14 year old is willing to risk $50 when his source of income is a whopping $14/week allowance. I make a lot more than that, and I'm not willing to risk $50.

 

what no liquid cooling? J/k what's inside? More specifically what motherboard is that.

 

Re-upping the video card and memory (RAM) is the cheapest fix...probably $150 for a new card with triple the processing capabilities of OEM, add a couple of memory sticks to that and performance will increase amazingly.

All in all about $200-$250, and usually do-it-yourself.

It depends on the card. Most high performance graphics card will require you to upgrade your power supply as well.

 

this build is over 18 months old, but it works well. mb is a asus m2nSLI deluxe. the box is in the attic, so i dont remember the model number. no need to liquid cool, yet. i have 7 variable speed fans, and Zalman coolers on the cpu and both video cards. power suply is a 1000 watt OCZ modular.

He loaded it. It didn't work. He's out $50, or I'm out the price of an "X16 PCI Express" compatible video card. Leaning towards his loss, I did warn him numerous times.

 

Did he play around with the settings, lower them and it should run, but not that smooth and less graphics.

My wife gave me Fallout 3 for xmas last year, just cranked it up last weekend. Looks like it could become a serious addiction. The old Wolfenstein game was great, I'll have to check out the new one.

I bought a Dell XPS box in February 2005. With 3.4 Ghz P4 processor, 512Mb RAM, and a 256Mb video card, it was near top of the line. Dual processor systems weren't common then, wish I'd waited. Power supply isn't interchangeable, either. Think it's 480 watts.

Since, I've upped RAM to 3Gb and video card to 768Mb nvidia 8800 series. Fallout 3 runs very well on medium settings, no jerkiness or pauses. Also runs my 3D CAD system well.

IMO, the 3.4 P4 processor was the important factor in keeping this system going long enough to play games like Fallout 3, Oblivion IV, and Assassin's Creed, but it is now at the edge of obsolescence as far as latest-edition PC games goes.

That's not an expensive item, but I'll defer to the more hardware-savvy to make a rec. as far as an actual replacement card.

Adding memory sticks will help. Open "My Computer" and click on System Information. That will show the amount you have now as well as processor specs.

Also, running disk cleanup and disk defragmenter regularly will keep speed up.

 

Yes, it's the only way to teach him the value of a dollar (which so far he doesn't seem to get).

 

No reason it shouldn't work, I could play on medium to low settings on my 2.0ghz laptop with a Nvidia Geforce 8600M. He should probably upgrade his pc so that he can play it on maximum settings though, there is a massive difference in graphics quality on medium and highest.

 

oh yea....... dont let him download the nude skin texture mods for the game.

one really talented guy added a program that puts a strip club in the corner of a bar in the game. 3 full nude, very well textured girls, dancing to Motley Crue's " Girls Girls Girls" when you walk in.

its OUTSTANDING entertainment.
