    For the upholstery experts, can you share any tips when you reupholstered the rear shelf with fabric, such as how to keep the fabric tight? What glue you used? How to keep the fabric from fraying? how to glue in the back just like the factory did?

    I looked at a loose piece from the rear shelf and couldn't figure out how the factory reupholstered the fabric onto these aluminum pieces, it looked so neat and nice.

    I did mine in leather. It has to be one of the easiest jobs with a high reward. Don't forget to get 1/4" foam to put between material and car for that nice 'squidgy' feel. I don't remember the exact glue but it was an aerosol like 'Scotch Upholstery Glue 808' ... a search on 'shelf' will find many, only look at those with pictures.

    As Paul said the Scotch 808 or 3M stuff works great. Use it liberally on both sides you want to adhere. If you aren't concerned about concours definitely consider leather. It looks nicer. Smells nicer. And is a great way to update the interior. I did mine about two years ago from a piece of leather that I got cheap off e-bay. I had plenty left over. So much in fact that I'm considering doing the targa top so it'll all match.

    Thanks guys! A piece got rip in the fabric when I stored the targa incorrectly so I plan to do just one piece, I bought 2 meters of the OEM fabric from ebay (about 1/3 the price of Reoriginal and it's exactly the same as the original fabric).

    I reupholstered my truck before but it was very difference. The thing I could not figured out was how the factory glued the back of the piece together but after playing with the fabric for sometime, I think I got it.

    Btw, on an '89 328 as some posters here pointed it out: there's no need to remove the small side glass window to drill out rivets, it's much easier than earlier 328's.

    I don't know if you will last all the 2 meters of fabric, but just in case I'm interested in buying the part that you will not use. I've to redone the rear shelf of my 308. It would be really great!! Could we deal with it?

    I did mine in German vinyl (as most all the rearmost pieces) and it turned out great. I carefully removed every bit of the original cloth, never made ANY attempt at cleaning it. I feel it'd probably clean up decently.

    This stuff would be nearly impossible to clean while ON the car, but not such a big deal if you can gently soak in Woolite or other suitable soap, rinse and let dry. If anyone wants what I have for a pattern (to save time on reinstallation) or to attempt to clean and re-use, you can have it.

    The only success I've had in cleaning the rear shelf fabric is with Zymol's Fabric Cleaner. Just cut with salt free seltzer as per the instructions and use a VERY soft tooth brush to work up the dirt, then blot dry. I've removed some stubborn water stains (without discoloration) with this product and method.
