Dear All, Is it possible to remove the aluminium firewall panel with out removing the engine? I have the RH fuel tank out and I am about to replace the A/C hoses and I don't like what I see disappearing behind the aluminium panel. Phelps.
can you post pics? In the parts book it looks like a many layered sandwich, not usre i would want to open it up. Did you are are you going to change the booster hose also?
G'day Rob, No I hadn't got that far. Like all good things Ferrari (or mechanical) the object of the excersise was to just remove the RH fuel tank so I could remove the A/C hoses. Of coarse as soon as I removed the fuel tank I found flaky rust running in behind the aluminium firewall panel. I know that there will be even more right in behind it. Yes it is a sandwich of insulating material behind a sheet of aluminium. A right recipe for rust. Phelps.
Here are a couple of photos of the panel in question. Its to the left and behind the A/C compressor. Phelps. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I dont think that alluminium panel is original.I had the same flaky foam on my car and replaced it with a alluminium panel, although I did it with the engine out.The only things that poke though it are the throttle and choke cables.I would bwt it would be a bummer of a job to do with engine in situ
I believe that the aluminum panel was not installed on all cars. I'm not sure if it is a US only or series 1 only. I think it is the former.
I would hazzard a guess the ali panel is a replacement and not origional. All the Euro GT4s I've seen over here (UK) have the padded shield, if you know what I mean? And they all tend to have heat damage, as mine has. Would hate to attempt replacing without removing the engine.
My 75 euro model has an aluminum panel, pretty sure it is original. I think it has some insulation behind it.
Yes that right it does. Also to add substance to it being original is that there is a folded steel ledge welded to the steel fire wall that runs right along the bottom of it for the aluminium one to sit in. Phelps.
