My daughter has tries the Neo-office and doesn't like it.

    she needs Word.

I find that Word for Mac is about $200, but the product below is $109.

would the "Word" that is in this product be OK for a student's needs? It does not apear to be an upgrade???

    thanks!!

Yes, get Home & Student. They charge more for the individual software (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) than they do for the entire suite, because they want you to use all of their software. I'm pretty sure the stand alone Word is identical, I can't guarantee that, but even if they aren't, Home & Student should be perfectly fine for her and for 99.9% of the population

What grade is she in? If she's in college her campus's computer store might have an even better deal.

I installed MacWord on Mrs. JRR's iMac this weekend. Purchased on-line from Microsoft itself, with an educator discount (she is a college prof).

Product SKU: GZA-00066 Product Name: Office 2008 for Mac Home and Student Edition Qty Ordered: 1 Amount: $149.95 Product SKU: DR_EDS_PRODUCT Product Name: Extended Download Service Qty Ordered: 1 Amount: $12.99

    $162 total.

She had been using MacPages, but it just didn't work smoothly enough when transitioning back and forth with an iDrive onto PC's.

p.s. The whole switch to Mac in our home has been painless and fun. Thanks to fellow Fchatter "fc1" for starting the ball rolling with Luca's iMac!

NeoOffice is the port of OpenOffice for Mac OS X. OpenOffice is also available for OS X, but I believe it has to run under X11 (not sure if this is still the case for the newest versions). If she doesn't like NeoOffice it is highly unlikely she will like OpenOffice. I personally like NeoOffice/OpenOffice a lot more than MS Office, but that's just me.
