Hi Guys for the last few months i have been considering importing a ferrari 348 from the Asia area, most likely Singapore and was wondering if anyone out there has done it and how did it go, was the process easy and basically was it worth it. When do you the sums it seems money wise you would come out in front but is it worth all the headaches. Would appreciate some feedback.

You might find it easier / cheaper / more reliable from the UK - there's a couple of threads in that section

I would think UK would be a better option , followed by HK and SGP for the 360s

Ahhhh see i thought you imported yours in just as they closed the 15 year rule in 2005 and '90 models were accepted for a short time.

PITA now that rule was changed. :(

If still current it would mean 94' model cars could come straight in.......and sub $100k F355's *drool*

Nah man, I never imported my car personally. Was brought into Aus in early 2004. I bought it 18 months later in mid 2005. :):)

    Yeah, true that. :D:D

    A sub $100K 355 sounds good to me. ;);)

Now, have you worked out that $70K car for me yet? :D:D

My total came in at around $88K. That is LCT, GST and Import tax. :):)

    I havent included any other fee's, transport etc..etc. :):)

back when i was importing cars they changed the rule,

at the start of 2004 they quickly changed the rules so no cars later than feb 89 could be brought in, and that is now the fixed date and the 30 year rule is the only one that is still advancing.

it was all pushed through really quickly because they finally realised that in 89 is when cars really turned a corner, and there would have been a flood of 15 year imports coming in. there were a few later 89 GTR's that came in the flux period of 3-4 months but once the papers were done no more came in.

only real option therefore is to get a car that is a 1988 model or older, or to get something where someone currently has RAWS approval.

It would have to be a 328 or perhaps even a testarossa at that price.

anything later than 89 needs a RAWS compliance plate and some workshops charge whatever they feel on those plates. Modena Imports in Sydney wants around 15k for just for the metal compliance plate on a 348, then you have to include the actual parts and labour costs to get it to Aussie specs on top of that amount.

and parts you need to change for RAWS compliance aint cheap, such as Catalyic converters.

It just seems going the RAWS route for a Ferrari adds a substantial amount on top of the already ridiculous taxes and import duty. So personal import seems the only way to go for a modern Ferrari priced at what the rest of the world pays.

Ahh thanks for clearning that up, :)

It seems that year was really a sweet spot for Ferrari too, Mondi T, 348, Testarossa with 5 nut wheels. All unreachable now on the cheap......
Gotta blame those jap importers on messing that up for everyone :(

Yes, all excellent info and sounds about right. :):)

Im just curious on the $70K car thingy.............thats all. Its not a 328 or a Testarossa. :):)

And forget about compliancing for now. Just need to know what the $70K car comes in at..........for now. Its for a friend and I am just trying to help him out. :):)

    You mean the 360 for 70k? :p

How about a car for your mate at around $20k AUD and landed in australia :D

might need a bit of work but at that price its a driver.....

    http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/200938341888378/sort/priceasc/search-target/usedcars/make/ferrari/model/mondial/quicksearch/true/postcode/sw193rq/page/1?previous=/search/results/usedcars/postcode/sw193rq/make/ferrari/model/mondial/quicksearch/true/sort/priceasc/page/1&anchor=advert200938341888378&logcode=p

7k GBP = 13k AUD times that by 1.21 which is the rate of Customs Duty and GST combined.
that comes to around 15.5k. that leaves 4k for shipping which im sure is more than enough.

only thing is he will have to be content with winning drag races only against hyundai excels :p :p

Customs includes the transport fees into the amount before GST.

    So it goes 70k car + 10% import duty + transport/insurance* = Amount to be GST'd.

    70k + 7k + 3k = 80k
    80K + GST = 88k

    Then you apply LCT.

    Grand Total of = $97246.00

    * - this amount will vary.

That $20K Mondial would be the go. At that price, you wouldnt waste your time tidying it up. Replace the cam belt and drive the wheels off it!:eek:

Ok, so I did to it wrong! Thanks mate. :D:D

Interesting way of doing it. :D:D

Its only $20K, go for it. ;);)
