My oil temp gauge is not reading pressure. The red indicator lite comes on & the night instrument lite comes on. I replaced the gauge with a new one, Same results.
Is there a trouble shooting method and resolution to get the oil pressure to read again on the gauge?
    thanks in advance.

Please clarify. You say your temp gauge isn't reading pressure? It isn't supposed to.

So let's assume a slip of the tongue.

If your oil pressure gauge isn't reading pressure and you replaced the gauge but it still doesn't work. Why not replace the pressure sensor?

Your profile mentions 3 cars. Which one has the problem? Some cars like the later carbed cars, have two pressure sensors on the engine, one for the red low pressure warning light and the other sensor is for the pressure meter.

You asked for a troubleshooting hint...first note the red 'lo press' light should come one when turning the key, before the car is started, then go out after the car starts. If it does work ok, then replace the other sensor. (which car/year please?)

Ok Paul, thanks for the reply.
It's the '79 308 carb. The red light on the gauge goes off after start up. The needle will not move. I checked the engine and you are right, it seems to have two sensors. Is there any trouble shooting involved, can they be repaired or just replace them as you mentioned ? How can I identify which sensor is for the red light opposed to the actual pressure sensor.
    thanks,
    Larry

Under the dash to the top right of the steering column are the connectors for the gauges. Disconnect and clean and reconnect after cleaning. That started up my inoperable temp gauge.

The oil pressure sender is the larger one under the oil filter -- item 32 in this SPC figure:

    http://www.ricambiamerica.com/parts_catalogs.php?M=FE&P=&V=diag&I=2175

(The oil pressure light switch is item 12.)

Unplug the pressure sender and touch the wire in the harness to ground (e.g., the metal piece 19 where the pressure sender is mounted) with the key "on":

If the oil pressure gauge needle moves to maximum, the gauge and wiring are OK, and the pressure sender is probably bad.

If the oil pressure gauge needle stays at zero, either the pressure gauge itself is bad, or you have a wiring problem like Doug mentioned.
