Porsche in F1?

Only makes sense if the run under the "Audi" Banner. They have the recent Le Mans prototype successful racing history and the pre-war "Auto Union" history. I think the four-rings back in grand prix racing would be something to behold. Anybody ever see these renderings?

I really don't see much of an Upside to Porsche going to F1. F1 and Ferrari go hand in hand. I seriously doubt they want Porsche or Porsche wants to enter a biased F1 program.

BTW, LOL at Porsche not having a F1 program!

 

And don't we all remember those lovely "zipper" BAR liveries!

As an engine supplier maybe, but I just don't see the VW/Audi group going full F1 racing under any of their nameplates.

 

Does it make sense for Renault and Toyota to be in F1? I don't really think 'business sense' is much of a consideration for some of the teams that are in F1, or rather it has not been much of a consideration in the past, but that seems to be changing.

 

No and they'll likely be gone soon. Seems we're heading for two manufacturers, a couple of well funded garagistes and more minnows than we can count.

I was under the same impression. Porsche owned a majority stock of VW. What happened there??

 

Ludvigsen's 3 volume P-car book has some wonderful info on this period, including the disasterous V-12 for Footwork. Porsche won one championship GP (France 1962) and actually were competitive but they bailed out as it was deemed too expensive, and their last entry as a single seat manufacturer (IRL) was a disaster, although Fabi did win an IRL race for them but with a March chassis. Ferrari is F1, Porsche is sportscar racing....

 

A 1.5L V-6 in a Porsche 917? No thanks!! I'd much rather have the original high torque Flat-12.

Edit: I see the LMK is a reproduction of the 917, but regardless, I doubt the V-6 would be happy in that car.

 

The upside is Porsche would likely win a WCC and WDC in a short time...maybe in the first year like Brawn is set to do in 2009. Porsche has always dominated any form on motor sport that it decided to participate in at a factory level. And, it would likely again do so in F1 as they did in the early-mid 80s. FYI, Porsche only pulled out of F1 after winning two WCC and three WDC after they announced it had defeated the world and had nothing further to prove

 

FYI, Porsche engined Mclarens won 25 F1 races including two WCC(1984-85) and three WDC(1984-85-86)

Their normally aspirated engine in the 1991 Footwork wasn't such a success.

IMO, winning as an engine supplier vs. winning as a complete team is two very different thing. Even Ford-Cosworth was able to win with Schumacher in the Bennetton in 1994 and they were far from being the best engine on the grid.

Yes they did as Paul mentions in post #38. Without checking, I'm going to say it was Dan Gurney who took the win in '62.

 

Thats exactly what happened.

However they were cash poor. When the stock on VW crashed Porsche quickly owed more than they had. VW turned the tables and offered a merger/take over, in order to keep them from going bankrupt.

VW is the greatest thing to happen to lamborghini. I really hope it turns out to be one of the best things for Porsche as of late. I really am sick of the whole "familying" of Porsche's products.

Porsche can still have a hand in SUV and sedeans but not under their name and they can focus on making more hardcore cars like GT3's etc... (maybe even cayman form), without having to worry about fundraising and emission fleet requirements.

Thank you. I just looked it up at the official F1 site, it was indeed Gurney who won at France for Porsche. That year, Graham Hill finished first as a driver and BRM won as a team ( I don't think they separated into WCC and WDC yet in 1962 ).

IMO, one race win as a team is hardly what I would call a successful F1 career, especially when you compare it to their history in sportscar and prototype racing.
