Ok, it's been raining for the last 6 weeks here, and during the local Italian CarFest my vehicle apparently suffered water penetration.

Unfortunately it went into storage after the show, and when I picked it up, there was green everywhere...

I had another series of shows that weekend, and so a wipe down with vinegar & water removed the visible mold -- but I know more is lurking.

Suggestions on truly cleaning this stuff out of the car?

Good thing I plan on keeping it, otherwise I would never post this in a public forum!

I get that often with my truck as always out in the wet and then stored awhile. vinegar does seem to be the best to clean. I wonder if you can put a dehumidifier in the car for awhile, just run power line through cracked window. Also some larger type silicon packs like they put in shoe boxes.

Get one of those tubs of desiccant with the water catch in the bottom. You won't believe how much moisture one of those things will suck out of an enclosed space (closet, car, etc.). Afterward, Leatherique the living sh*t out of your interior.

    Sorry for your mess... ick.
Were it warm and sunny I'd say open it up and put a fan to blow through it. But this time of year... Pull your seats and use a small upholstery steam cleaner on your carpets. they have mold/mildew additives you can put in the solutions. Go to your local hardware store and ask for Damp Rid, put a can or two of that in the car set on a plastic plate on the vinyl under the seats and let it work to suck the moisture out. It works well in a confined area.

While its drying, go look for that hole!!!

    Man Tillman that's too bad...

I agree with Rob... You might also try sitting it outside in direct sunlight. Top off, windows down. You need to get as much latent moisture out as possible. If it's in the interior, I would take the seats and floor mats out and put them in the sun as well.

While you're at it. Send your rims to me and I'll put them on my car for mold removal. :)

    Good luck buddy.

Trust me, once you get mold, even after it dries, as soon as it even gets a little humid again the smell comes back. Sucks, but it is a long term battle, it will take many rounds of vinegar, deep cleaning, and drying. It is beatable though.

Yeah, I think I'm looking at new carpet and new seat foam at a minimum. I'm also worried if there's stuff in the wiring behind the dash. It was in the seat pockets, inside the seat belt reels, etc. -- and my radio quit working.

Seems I remember a thread where you had your car repainted recently. Was any of the glass removed? Have you tracked down the leak?

almost every time I've had a new window put in a car, I had water problems afterwards. fried a $2,500 ECU on my BMW 325is that was only worth a little more than that. :(

for what its worth, your best bet is to go get the car sprayed and or oiled underneath via rustproofing, we do that here all the time...you need to address potential rust that the humidity will cause, and that includes all the wiring throughout the car...we call it rustproofing here...thats your first step...once you do this, then go to the paint as the next step, and i would recommend non direct sunlight, but a heated garage of sorts, but not to hot where it bakes an dries out the leather, rubber seals....i would say 65 degrees...we do that here in Canada often...its your best bet, then worry about the paint. Hope this helps.

Take the ozone generator out of the grow room and let it run a few hours in the closed car. You will be suprised what a little 03 will absorb. The problem is killing the organism. Another car type had problems with mouse urine and a few hours with the ozone generator got rid of it. I can't say if it will last-----------------yet! cheers

mold just grows where it has 'food' ....paper, jute and such......

not likely it's under the dash, but the seat bottoms (underneath) should be sprayed down, I'd use a mild bleach there as it won't show....

there are over 2,000 strains of 'black mold' but only four are toxic...

It think the green mold is what is used for penicillin, so now giving those skanky strippers a ride home is probably 'ok'......

Talk to the guys at leatherique.

I think, but a not sure, that hydrogen peroxide will kill mold. Then you clean the leather with pristine clean and away you go.

I may be wrong on the H2O2 so I'd double check with them. Have a buddy who called 'em after his Porsche suffered the same fate, and he told me their suggestion was 100% on target.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I -think- the water came through the quarter window seals, although the targa seals are suspects too. Looking at the patterns, the water came in around the window seals and then ran down the rear bulkhead into the floors.

The windows were not affected by the recent paint.

I just found out the damage is covered under my comprehensive insurance from State Farm, so at least that is working in my favor.

Wow Tillman, That sucks! Don't have any suggestions as to how to kill mold other than bleach, but would like to offer our less humid climate and a heated garage to store your steed for the winter, also be happy to BS the neighbors and friends as to who the owner is!

We have had nothing but 2 straight months of solid rain here. My 308 had been sitting in my garage for about 3 weeks. When I uncovered it for a drive between rainstorms last weekend, the steering wheel was covered in green mold. Nothing else in the whole car but the steering wheel.

    Weird.

Seriously, you guys might want to purchase a de-humidifier and just let it run 24/7 in your garage until the weather gets better. dump it every day, you'll be suprised how much water it takes out of a room.

Sounds like most of you folks are not used to mold as an almost daily "pest" to deal with. Here in the tropics we have to interact with mold all the time. One PP said it best; remove the food source; that is, if you can. Organic materials plus moisture are mold gardens. For example the leather on the steering wheel can get "fuzzy" over night. Leather plus latent persperation is all it takes. Carpets in the car are often a major problem when they have a jute backing or a felt-type material under them.
My poor solution is to get rid of everything that gets moldy in the first place. If that's impossible, dehumidify the environment the object is kept in. All open cell foam must be removed and replaced with new material. Everything that retains humidity must go. Can a 3x8 be "mold-proofed"? Sadly, probably not. Good luck, Tillman.

I keep my Ferrari windows open a few inches in the garage and no mold. Let air through it. And I never drive in the rain, but I'm weird like that!

    HYDROGEN PEROXIDE!! Mix 50% H2O2 and H2O.

It is bleach, but a very mild form of it.

I think it may really do the trick, just need to get it off the material when you're done.

Also, I think as it works, it breaks itself down into water and oxygen, so it doesn't continue to bleach the material, once its job is done.

Let it dry, clean with some leather cleaner to make sure, and BOOM!! good as new.

I googled mold and leather, every hit said Hydrogen Peroxide, mix 50% water 50% H2O2.

    There ya go.

    Dave
