Info Needed - Porsche 908/2

I am trying to figure out the history on a Porsche 908/2 with the #36 and 'BP' livery that was supposed to have raced at Zeltweg. I have the slot car version of the Porsche and the base says the car finished 4th at Zeltweg in 1969:

But....

RacingSportsCars.com does not list a #36 car entered in Zeltweg 1969:

Another website which lists a #11 car & no #36 car:

They show that Masten Gregory drove the #11 car to a 4th place overall and a class win...



But... I have found pictures on the web showing a #36 car in the race....

The color photograph proves the #36 did race in what would look like a race against other cars and car numbers that show up on the 1000 km of Zeltweg grid. But, all documentation of the race on the web has the Masten Gregory car as the #11 car.

Anyone have any more information on the car or the race???? I have done a lot of searching and cannot find out a definitive answer. Even the Porsche Museum could not give me an answer.

I was looking through my Porsche 908 book and couldn't find mention of a car number 36, also checked with Autocourse and the same.

I just came across this page of results

Looks like the model you have may have been numbered incorrectly or they put the wrong model on the base!

Looks like the first 908/2 spider which was sold by the factory to a private entrant in 1969 and came 3rd at Watkins Glen. Driven by Masten Gregory and Richard Brostom it came 4th in the last race of 1969 at Zeltweg in Austria.

This is from Karl Ludvigsen's book Excellence was Expected vol1. Sorry, at first glance there are no pictures of this specific car but I could look a little further if its any help.

Mark, does EWE say the number is 36? My copy of Porsche 908 gives The Gregory/ Brostom car as number 11, as do a few other references I have found. I wonder where the confusion has come from?

I don't have Carl's book, which I would say is the final word on Porsche history, so I defer to your research.

 

I can find nothing in writting mentioning a #36 car racing at the 1969 1,000km of Zeltweg. There was a lesser Zeltweg race in 1969 but the car that came in fourth was a 910 driven by Ernst Kraus. Gregory did race at that race:

Can anyone figure out where the picture is from of the race in my first post if it is not from the 1000km of Zeltweg?

Any pictures of the #11 Gregory 908/2 from Zeltweg? I cannot find any.....

 

I don't have a scanner at the moment here at home but I could scan the pages I can find in EWE for you tomorrow. There doesn't seem to be any mention of the car race numbers in the text and unfortunately the pictures don't show a no.36 or a no.11 908/02 There is a 908/02 with 36 but its the "Flounder" type with smoother body shape.

Karl L does note that the Brostrum car (908/02 001) came 4th at the .."last Manufacturers Championship Race.." at Zeltweg in 1969 "Other 908's came 5th, 6th and 7th in the same race." Doesn't say if it was a 500km or 1000km race but its possible the no36 in the colour photo is one of the 5/6/7th placed cars perhaps?

Looking at the racingsportscar site the 1000km race was a Championship for makes Round 10 and the No 11 car of Gregory/Masten came 4th overall and 1st in class. Also noted as being White/Red colour scheme.

Sounds like the model base is incorrectly labelled or something like that.

Great excuse to look through the books though - thanks for that! And Matt, those are great websites....!

I found this photo in my Porsche 908 book.

The results page for this race doesn't give any car numbers unfortunately.

The text reads : A win for the 917: On the Osrerreichring in August 1969, the 908 Spyders are no longer fast enough for the victors podium. Still fourth place went to Richard Brostrom and Mastern Gregory in a 908/2.

Ok so here is one take on the story from the SlotFourm website (ironically, that site is where I first posted about this topic!)

"There were in fact 2 sports car races held at Zeltweg in 1969! In July Brostrom entered 2 cars in the inaugural short non-championship race held at this new circuit, a 910 which he drove himself and a 908/02 for Gregory who had BP sponsorship at the time. In the later stages of the race the 908 hit trouble and was pushed across the line by Brostrom to 4th place. This was deemed as illegal and later the car was disqualified.

The second race was in August a few weeks later and Brostrom and Gregory were to partner each other in the same 908 as this was going to be a 1000k event. However the trailer came detached while on an Autobahn and the car was destroyed. Bronstrom bought one of the ex Austria 908's and still in it's white and red livery it was this was the car they both raced to 4th in the 1000k's! (you can see where all the confusion is coming from now!) This car did carry the number 11, and of course Gregory's BP sponsored car from the earlier non-championship race was car number 36!"


I would like to see either a book or a known website showing the race numers of the cars entered in the July Zeltweg race.

This was interesting and the pic in the first post verifies it:

"Anyway, at the first race Broström drove a white car with a blue and yellow band (not green and yellow as on one scale model). The second car Broström bought from the Austrian team and it was white with red bands over the fenders."
