I'm redoing an old house. I'm going to have a wireless router off of either cable or off of DSL.

I'm also going to run an RJ45 cable out to the apartment I'm building behind the house, ~150 feet.

    2 questions.

    1. Is there a limit to how far you can run RJ45 cable?

    2. Can you put a second wireless router in the apartment (first being in the main house)?

I'm trying to not have to pay for DSL twice.

I use Apple Airport routers. There are four in a rather long, two-story house — one at each end on each floor. This is because there is a lot of steel in the framework of the house and that tends to interfere with the signal. One is designated the "master" and the other three are slaved to it. It works perfectly, with transparent hand off of one to the other as you move around. Because of the steel framework, the metal roof and metallic film on the windows, I had to put up a cell-phone antenna on the outside of the house and a repeater inside the house to amplify the cell signal to "more bars in more places" status. All problems have solutions. Only one of the Airports is connected by land line to the internet.

100 meters (~300 feet) before you have to hit a router.

Yes - just set up the second router (or 3rd or 4th for that matter) in 'repeater' mode
linked to the main router. That's how my house is set up. I have 1 main router with
2 repeater routers to cover the whole house and deck.

Not all routers have any option for repeater or access point mode so do your homework before you buy! The Apple Airports sure do make life easy compared to some of the junk out there from Netgear, DLink, et al.

As for the limits on ethernet - the standard is 100m as posted above but longer will work especially if the cable is properly terminated and of high quality to begin with. I know of installations (not mine I hasten to add!) with runs of over 700'.

Our office is about 300 ft away so we're using two wireless access points with wireless routers at each end. The access points only communicate with each other forming a "virtual" wire. It works perfect.

if your outbuilding is on the same power grid as the main house, have a look into 'homeplugs'.

If you want to take the path of 2 routers, then try look at units that run Linux, i.e. Linksys WRT54GL. You can load 3rd party firmware that allow you to control things like, signal strength, priority, QoS, static IP's, etc.

    this forum is helpful...

    possible scenarios,
    House: WRT54GL + homeplug
Outbuilding: homeplug + 8 port switch

    or
    House: WRT54GL
    Outbuilding: WRT54GL in repeater mode
