Just a suggestion for the Sunday drive (even though I wont be on it). For those with lower/long front-ends (early Lambos..etc), 180 may not be the best choice for that front airdam area. A solution that will still get you a nice ride with about the same distance would be. 1) At the "rockpile" continue RIGHT to Turners corner. Take to end. (vs making the left and headning north on 60) 2) Make left @ TurnersCorner, heading north on 19/129 past NeelsGap to Vogle (lunch). 3) Leave Vogle, make left, continue a few miles north and make a RIGHT onto 180. 4) In about 2miles make a RIGHT onto Richard B. Russel (348). Take to end. 5) At the bottome of RBR make right back to end on 19/129, make a right and in 5m+ you will be back at Turners Corner and head left to return backwards. .......all still real nice roads. (Just offering that alternate suggestion). Enjoy and have a safe ride, BobR
On the route given for Sunday, you stay on GA-120 all the way to GA-400. It's more direct if you turn onto GA-141 -- are you not doing that because of the road-widening construction on 141? If you do take 120 all the way to 400, Google Maps gives the trip time to the Chevron station as exactly one hour. Since I intend to meet you there rather than going all the way to Kurt's, I'll assume that you'll get to Chevron right around 11? Google also gives the trip time from Chevron up to Vogel (via Suches) as 53 minutes. If we limit the stop at Chevron to 10 minutes and also throw in a 10 minute break at the Suches general store, we would get to Vogel around 12:15 -- not bad for lunch.
Just a friendly bump on the car show for tomorrow at Kurts 10 am - 4:00 pm. A little on the chilly side so the cars will love it. Mary and I plan on attending hope to see everyone. Sincerely Vic
Looking forward to seeing all you guys tomm. The testarossa will probably stay at home due to i'm bringing a few friends in my truck, but will be a blast anyway. Bring a jacket!!!!!!
My drag race @ Atlanta dragway just got cancelled, so I was up for ICD I just called Kurts & they said its on, I live 7 miles away & its raining right now, Might take the Fiat.
Fantastic turnout for the conditions! Thanks to all of the car owners for coming out in the cold, wet weather and showing off your cars! My pics: http://s211.photobucket.com/albums/bb56/kevinm_010/Italian%20Car%20Day%202009/ Was that Murcielago that showed up the new LP-650? I noticed the badge on the engine said 6.5L, instead of 6.4. When I got home and uploaded the pics, I noticed I took 328 pictures and videos. A nice number to sum up the day! -kevin
It was an LP640. 640 stands for the power, not the displacement. The engine size from 02-06 was 6.2 liters. 07 and up including the LP670/4 SV and the LP650/4 Roadsters (which are all Grigio Telesto with orange trim) are 6.5. I believe the car was an 09 that was traded in at Lamborghini Atlanta with under 1,000 miles. Great looking car with a great sounding exhaust. The owner who bought it within the past two weeks was a very nice guy too.
Thanks for the info. I didn't know all the 650s were gray and orange. Now that I look back at a previous Murcielago LP640 that I photographed, I see it says 6.5L. For some reason I thought I remembered it saying 6.4L. So I was completely off! Pardon my silliness. Thanks again! -kevin
Strange - last week the weather people predicted rain, which was in fact on the radar, but it all evaporated before reaching here and we didn't get a drop. This week they basically predicted NO rain, and there was indeed none on radar when I left the house, but instead the rainclouds formed directly overhead and we got about 3 hours of drizzle! Just proof that even in this day of sophisticated science, weather forecasting is still a black art. Anyway, I was impressed by the turnout and the enthusiasm. While there undoubtedly some no-shows on account of the conditions, I was pleasantly surprised by the quantity and the quality of the cars that did turn out, and the fact that most stayed right through the rain to the end. I think it was a class act to name the Best of Show award for the late George Tyrones; I would have suggested that if someone else hadn't beaten me to it. So here are some wet horses and bulls, minus the ones that arrived later. The other marques will be posted when I get a round tuit. Oh, the 308 GT4 in blu scuro in the second photo won Best of Show. I had a blast this year! I was very impressed and happy that so many showed up and stayed to the end! Really great show. I thought it was really cool seeing all the wet exotics. Thanks to everyone who helped put it on, especially John Montgomery and Jeff Davison!
I had a great time too! It was a much stronger turnout than expected considering the rain with some very nice cars. +1 on the thanks to John and Jeff. They really do a nice job!
Actually I believe that's a 365. The 308gt4 was spectacular, I've always liked that design~ Chris Chris
No, it's its successor, the 365 GT 2+2, the "Queen Mother" of Ferraris, probably their largest road car until the 612, which fills the same place in the lineup today.
It was a surprise to see 4 Mondials at the show, easily the most I've ever seen in one place aside from the Concorso Italiano. And two actually had backseat passengers! Here are some photos of some of the other marques. The race car in the last photo is an Ermini, a car based on the Fiat 1100 chassis but in this case using an Alfa engine. I knew it seemed like I had more pics than showed up on photobucket. Here are all of them: http://s211.photobucket.com/albums/bb56/kevinm_010/Italian%20Car%20Day%202009%20Pics/ -kevin
Here are the rest of mine, mainly made up of late arrivals and detail shots. In the photo of the three Lamborghini ragtops, they look awfully sinister! (I think they're angry that they had to go around with those rather ugly softops in place. These cars look much better with the tops stowed.) For my parting shot here, as a public service, here is a scan of the list of sponsors of Italian Car Day, which was on the back of the windshield identification cards. We owe these entities a debt of gratitude, not just for ICD but for year round. There's a lot of info on this scan -- you might want to print it out or store it on your hard drive. Not only are John and myself greatful to our sponsors, they are but one of the four groups that made the show sucsesful.... The sponsors, as mentioned, but also Kurt and Vreny who supplied the venue and the meals, the volunteers that helped with the set-up, running and teardown/clean-up, and also the brave souls of the participants and spectators that attended, who all knew or discovered that dispite all the rumors and myths,, Italian cars do not melt in the rain. John and I are greatful to all and we extend our thanks to all on behalf of ourselves and for the Atlanta Fiat/ Lancia Unlimited Club. Jeff
Greetings all, I am terribly sorry that no one was able to come out to represent George and Old World Motorcars for the honor that you most graciously bestowed upon him with the Best of Show Award this year. My wife rode in the Tour de Pink Fundraiser on Saturday and by the time that she had cycled and we wrapped up there, it was too late. We actually did come by, but everything was over with and all but two people were left who were cleaning up. As I said, I am truly sorry, but, after all of her training and hard work, I had to be there for my wife as she took on the hills of Dunwoody. I hope you all understand. I looked at the pictures and am happy to see that, despite the rain, there was a great turnout. A great big Thank You to John and Jeff for the very thoughtful display of support for George's family by honoring him and his contributions to the automotive community through Italian Car Day 2009. As most of you know, George's wife, Andrea has taken over the reigns here at Old World Motorcars, as well as running her two vehicle storage operations, European Auto Vault, and All Wheels Vehicle Storage. The Team is backing her up 100% and we are moving forward. We do thank everyone for the continued support from the automotive community. We continue to have customers pass by and offer condolences and talk for a while, which has been very much appreciated. On behalf of George's wife and kids, and the Old World Motorcars Team, all the best to all of you and thanks again to John, Jeff and the entire Italian Car Family for your support. Michael
