Can an old muffler be restored by painting it or polishing it. I want my old muffler dressed up a bit since it's rusted looking. Anyone done this before or know what possibilities are available?

Paint isn't going to restore a muffler. It might make it look a little less rusty however....

I'm just looking to sprucing up the outside. I'm afraid paint will peel after some time. I've seen headers chromed before and wonder if there's something I can do to brighten up the muffler.

I think Flitz is like a polish in where I'd have to keep polishing it as time goes on. I was hoping for something that lasts longer. Of course I could be wrong as I haven't used it before.

I'm no expert on metal finishes, but I don't know of a treatment that gives long lasting results inbetween treatments. Let us know what you discover.

I had the OEM Ansa mufflers on my BB512i ceramic coated ~7 years ago for a few hundred dollars and they still look like new. I have since replaced the the mufflers with a SS one from Bell and had the headers re-coated inside and out even though they really didn't need it.

I power-washed my ANSA, sanded out the visible rust and painted it with VHT 1500F black paint. After two years it still looked good, but some had come off along the main inlet pipes. I think if it were sand blasted and primed with something high temp, the VHT would have a very hard time coming off, and I also wish I had used wrinkle paint. Though Ceramic might work, I fear the metal is going to rot out under the coating. My ANSA is nearly 30 years old and solid as a rock. I am not going to do anything that might shorten its life or spend $$$ on it. If it rots out I'll just replace it.

It also depends whether you have catalytic converters or not, I dont (factory non-catalyst car). My muffler probably never sees temps much over 500F anywhere, but cats could heat your muffler to well over 1200F, and over 1500F if something is amiss. Not many coating's are going to handle that kind of heat.

Parkerfe - Who did your ceramic coating. I see you're not to far from me. If ceramic doesn't pan out I think I'll try high temp paint like Artvonne suggested. Thanks guys for the help.

Oh and I do have cats but high flowing ones.

If it wasnt painted before, I wouldnt do that. You may just be causing yourself to have more work later if it doesnt hold well.

Recently, I'm considering having my tips re-chromed and the muffler just cleaned really good with a metal polish.

Post pics before/after of your decision.

I was considering having the originals removed and re-chromed.

Only challenge was attaching them symetrically. I guess a jig or something to get em on straight.

    Suggestions?

Is there any way to make our OEM muffler rust faster so I can replace it?

Many years ago when concoursing my 308QV, I removed the muffler and sandblasted it back to bare metal, keeping the chorme tips covered. I then spray painted it with the correct colour header paint, 5 coats very thinly applied.

Between each coat I heated it up on the gas barbecue, to get rid of the "burning paint smell". By the time this exercise was finished (all day), I was sunburnt to a crisp (the hot Aussie sun) and covered in black header paint, as was the barbeque.

No more snags off that Barbie, wife would't talk to me for a week .. oh well kept working away :):)

PS - The muffler looked so good I had to go and by an ANSA sports to use for 'everyday' and the original only for Concours.

I sent it off to have a metalic ceramic coating applied and then polished. I'll post pics and details once I get it back. :)

Well the used exhaust had some small debris in it when I got it. I didn't think much of it and shipped it out. Come to find out the exhaust's internal cats had broken and the there were some bits loose in the muffler. Once the shop started polishing the muffler some more loosened up. The muffler came out quite well but unfortunatley I think I'll be tossing it due to the cats being damaged. :( Here's a pic of the shops work. BTW the shop was great to deal with and charged about $150 to coat it and polish it. Would recommend them just make sure what they start with is solid. http://www.amr-coatings.com/metallic_ceramic.html
