Great work Dave! This was one of the main reasons I sold my 348- It amazed me at some of the electrical issues that should not be. The mess at the door pins was one of the main issues I remember in mine. I repaired them but not as nice as your fix is... Chris
Dave, I posted this in the 355 section but just in case you don't see it I've posted here also. Please repost your electrical connector kit and install tool set in FerrariAds. Any updates on additional connectors and boots for the 355 besides what I have?? Thanks
Hi Dave I've gotten several request for a redo this fall of the wiring harness on the 2.7 and 5.2 355's. Are you able to supply in addition to the basic gold connector kit the following items: 1. MAF sensor connectors 2. O2 sensors connections 3. Coil Pak connectors Regards Bruce
1) Yes but not in Gold. Considered having them plated but..... I made up two loaner tools as nothing could be found that was reasonable. Both are now MIA, guess a deposit would have been a good idea but.... Going to have to widdle up a few new ones. 2) Same as above 3) Yes in Gold We are finding there are a plethora (how do you like that one Bruce ..at 4AM to boot!) of sub standard boots, connectors, tools, plugs.... available on the market now. It requires ordering numerous versions of each, some can be thrown out instantly after a quick visual...some require testing to identify which is best suited for the task. A lengthily process but worth the effort. Working on 5 more problematic connection points on the 2.5, 2.7 and 5.2 now with a few hundred samples of each replacement connector in route. Three connection points on the 7.3 are currently being tested that will also trickle down to the earlier units if they prove out what we suspect to see. Our new relationship with Bosch has proven to be very helpful in advancing this to a new level...we keep plugging away and it keeps getting better. No end in sight as research in one area leads to another and we keep finding problems we didn't even know we had. Its all good so far.
Easier said than done.......I bet Dave forgot who he lent them too! Thats what happens at most workshops! ****s come in and borrow tools and they dont return them. Then, you start wondering who you borrowed them to and you dont know where to start chasing people up for your tools! The last tool I handed out at my old workshop was a 3/4" breaker bar and it was never returned. The guy that borrowed it was kinda of a mate. 2 months later when I FINALLY caught up with him, he said he never borrowed it, but he said he will look for it at home. I never got it back............of course I still lend tools out to good mates only now and I am currently awaiting the return of 2x spring compressors and a 14mm rachet spanner.
No, in both cases I know who got them as they went out with optional terminal kits for which I have found no economically priced tools. I figured I would take the time to machine up a few of them and just rotate them to whom ever was next in line. A few times the one owner simply sent them to the next person waiting and all benefited ...the chain broke this time. One of the cases I believe to be innocent and a result of a medical problem...I hope thats the case as the kit payment (along with a much larger payment for other services) went missing with the tool. The other case is sadly not innocent. Regardless, I choose to believe this is a tight knit community where the overwhelming majority can be trusted at their word and thats how I choose to do business. Small headaches that do not pay to get worked up about but it does hurt others waiting in line and I now have to find the time to machine up new ones. That pales compared to the two well know shops/cars sales companies that recently stiffed me for combined 5 figures...Beware of the old guy that Doesnt yell, those are the ones to be worried about. After near four decades in this business I have seen all types that are lured into this market by the promise of quick big money they make for a few years....I too have seen many fold after a successful short run and disappear into the woodwork with skeletons stacked all around them. Its the nature of this business.
Is the 550 subject to these same connector corrossion issues? Do you see the same connectors in use and the same environment that make you extrapolate that there may be a problem? I don't mean to be critical and I feel that the David Helms / Brian Crall sort here are the white knights, so please don't misconstrue an honest question as being nefarious. I'm just asking if you've seen stuff.
Dave, I would like to buy one of your kits for a 1995 348 Spider. Can you tell me what I need to do ?? Thanks
Its been pointed out to me that it is improper for me to discuss any of my devolopements under the current conditions. In an attempt to respect the wishes of others I cant answer your questions but can point you to FerrariAds.com... Fatso...give a call, I might have an alternate solution depending on your end goal. Sure hope you are not gutting a perfectly good car AGAIN.
Dave, So you are researching and posting solutions to well documented problems plaguing various Ferrari models and you cannot detail results to respect the wishes of others! On a forum dedicated to Ferrari! Now that is an interesting conundrum!
I have been censored also.....guess all of this new stuff will have to be discussed where there is freedom of speech and the ability to share and produce innovative quality fixes for major issues with both current and past models. Sad that things have come to this stage on a forum that is supposed to be the end all for Ferrari enthusiast.
Brian, I respect your right to that opinion, but you must look at it through Rob's eyes and there may be a backstory(ies) that you weren't privy too. FerrariChat provides a nice conduit, but it ain't free to Rob. For example, the guys posting in the supercar forum have fully planned an F40 reunion and all Rob asked was fair exposure for all his efforts and they got into a squabble over it. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=254887&page=4 Brian, why not ante up the $15 per year and get a lot more fun at less than the price of a movie and popcorn for one person? On the other hand, I truly appreciate the innovation and dedication to excellence that David Helms provides the community. His humor is pretty entertaining to. These gold connectors are known for improving connections in high end electronics, so having them in a much harsher environment like a car seems like a no-brainer. I'll bet that manufacturers know that Gold is better but they are prohibitively expensive. WHAT ABOUT CIRCUIT BREAKERS? --------------------------------- On a similar note (and one of my pet peeves over many years) are fuses. Old style, prone to connectivity issues, but cheap which is why manufacturers use them. As an example, Rally cars/race cars use circuit breakers which are far superior to fuses. On production cars, too expensive but there is a large aftermarket supply of breakers for this application. Performing a quick 2 sec Google serach yields many: http://www.wiringproducts.com/contents/en-us/d28.html http://www.cooperbussmann.com/pdf/383c094e-15c9-4c38-953c-6033b67204d0.pdf
Well, Dave, I'm glad to see that you haven't been "banned" completely. To those of you who don't know Dave (and anybody who has a Ferrari really should), those who might have the slightest doubt regarding his honesty, integrity, or commitment to F-cars and their owners should reference the above quoted post as well as any and all others that he has made here on F-Chat (sometimes at 4 a.m., no less!) I fully believe that Dave comes on this site with the sole intention of helping to solve whatever problems come up with Ferraris and their owners, NOT out of any desire to increase revenue for his business or for himself. I also believe that the fundamental purpose of F-Chat is for Ferrari owners to ask questions and get answers from the people who have the experience and knowledge to solve them. I don't know of anyone who has been more helpful to more Ferrari owners than Dave. Rob, I hope that you will consider the level of Dave's experience and expertise, reconsider your decision, and let Dave say what he has to say here. The idea that he is trying to get free advertising for himself or his shop by answering some technical questions is, in a word, ridiculous. Now, I've seen some rude responses from other posters in certain threads; THOSE are the guys who ought to be banned. Dave has never been anything but polite and helpful. If it weren't for Dave and Scuderia Rampante, I wouldn't (and probably couldn't) own a Ferrari and live where I do. Dave is an invaluable asset to the Ferrari community, nothing more or less. Dave, here's hoping that you'll maintain a presence here on F-Chat, and "walk the line" by continuing to say what you're still allowed to say; and that Rob will reconsider his ill-advised decision. Ferrari owners who have had experience with Dave: What say you?
I fully concur with the above. Dave has always been helpful to me, but I know that's because he wants to drive my BT29
One of the main reason I keep visiting FerrariChat is to see if Dave has posted anything. If he continues to be sensored my visits to FerrariChat will become less and less frequent. I'm glad I know how to reach Dave outside of FerrariChat.
+1 Not to mention the blatant commercial advertisers found on FerrariAds. Those who consistently offer GOOD advice deserve some credit, the services and products are for the very community on this Forum. I have never seen Dave or some others totuting for business, I did once and had my post pulled.
The day is still young... Call it muffled, not silenced. My entire career has been given to fixing problems, not creating them. This is a difficult situation and I am one damn stubborn old coot (this is where Gary usually swoops in with timely photo's)... One has to respect those that call the shots and those that can afford to play the game. When the rules of the game become a moving target and the enforcement of such becomes highly selective in who it targets, that is when I ....have a problem.
I was told a looong time ago, 'it's hard to make friends, easy to make enemies'. I respect the help of many found on here and try to reciprocate accordingly. It's slim pickins in these parts and in this economy, my rep and word have to be good. With the help of many here, I gather information and disseminate it carefully. Thanks again, Dave, brian, et al.
About 12 extra hrs in a day, a life and a road going Ferrari of my own that runs.... Past that I do not understand the question.
