Same story in the Post. I'm thinking of running down there and getting one. Should be a profit maker after 1/1/10. Thanks to the suckers (oops I mean taxpayers) for making this possible.

Jeez... very cool. But if you're smart you would buy the car and then sell it in a state without such an amazing tax credit.

 

If you do pick one up, as part owner, I expect a ride around the block. It's only fair. You know what they say, what's yours is mine, what's mine is negotiable.

I've thought about this a bit more. It appears that the credit is to your 2009 state income tax. You'd have to be making a LOT of money in order to receive the entire $42k credit.

 

If it's a state credit as it appears, does this mean you'd need to owe CO >$42k to realize the entire credit? Ouch!

 

Looks that way. You'd be making so much at that point that the credit would hardly matter.

 

You can spread the credit over 5 years.

They look cool and they're fast but on Top Gear they said it takes 16 hours to recharge ! Can you imagine the current draw for 16 hours and the cost of that electricity ? Probably like running an electric oven all day long, everyday.
On Top Gear, it kept breaking down too. I don't think they went a single lap without battery or car failure.
It's cool and I like it but they need to work out the bugs and get larger capacity, faster charging batteries.

 

If you charge it with the recommended 220v/80a for 8 hours it would be roughly 140 KwH, when you take the average charge of electricity for where I live in NJ which costs 11.5 cents kWh that would be just over $16 for a full tank.

There are several new types of batteries which use different technology than the current lithium ion used in the Tesla, and can recharge in just a few minutes, but they are still 5 years out at best.

 

Sorry, old thread, but someone emailed me this tax credit on Oklahoma Teslas and I thought of this thread. Anyone else hear of this? I know someone who could actually use the tax credit and there is sport model on the lot that would be $61.5k ($138k list) after the credit. Pretty tempting as I would guess you could flip after having some fun and still come out ahead even considering some extra for the friend's trouble.

For those of you that have experience with the car, is it worth it? Anyone know the resale market for these? Maybe with a few thousand miles on the clock?

I often wonder if Tesla is the next GM. If this program is simply generating money to keep Tesla in business until they can produce a car for the masses.

I have been to the Tesla facility in LA and I have been in a Tesla. They are impressive for sure. The acceleration is neck snapping. If everything here in upstate NY weren't so far apart I would most likely buy one, but the big question is should I buy the stock when they IPO?

 

Tesla has been having alot of issues lately, one story had the CEO going broke and he owns %65 of company. Hopefully the IPO will generate some cash flow, looks like it would be a cool car for the price with all the breaks.

I bought a Tesla in December and drove it 2,000 miles before trading it in on a F430. I loved it. The Oklahoma tax credit is real but goes away at the end of this month (6 days!). The car was VERY fast, quiet, except for road noise at higher speeds and a ton of fun. It cannot take corners like a Ferrari and it cannot reach 200 mph like an F430. It was also very cheap to charge. It cost about $4 for a full charge, which was 150 miles if you drive like a psychopath and 240 miles if you have your wife in the car. It also does better at higher altitude since there is no combustion. All this is of course offset by the fact that my county (Boulder) charges $3,000 per year to register the plates! My f430 is only $1,000! So all those fuel savings go to the DoT. The tax credit made it a good buy, however. Without it, I think the car costs about $50k too much for the value it brings. Model S from Tesla should have more utility and better price. Regarding resale, I got $130k on a $160 sticker price.
