The food is great! if you like chinese it's the best.
I'm in Los Angeles now but when I'm back in N.Y. first thing chinese!

Italian food is outstanding!!!

Old school is Rao's in the Bronx but worth it.

Try a pastrami sandwich at a deli as well.....

And the pizza, the best by far.

 

Born and raised in NY, moved from there is 2005. Here is my list:

Pizza- Joe's Pizza on Carmine Street, small place, expect to grab a slice or 2 and walk. Or Ray's Pizza on Prince Street. You will see 100's of Ray's, Famous Ray's, Famous Original Rays and Ray Bari Pizza. The true 1st ever Ray's Pizza is the one on Prince Street in Little Italy. Also the original St. Patricks is on the corner of Mulburry and Prince, the scenes from the Baptism in The Godfather were filed inside that Church.

Hotdogs- Any "dirty water dog" from a street cart will do just fine, but Gray's Papaya is amazing. Several throughout the city.

Italian Food- Rao's in the Bronx is good, but very hard to get in there. I prefer Coppola's on the Upper West Side.

Sushi- Go to Sushi Samba on Park Ave. South

Seafood- City Lobster or City Crab.

Steak- The Palm on 2nd Ave.

For Breakfast- There are a ton of Greek diners around, can't go wrong there.

 

Two great Restaurants:

1) Blue Water Grille (@ Union Square)/Great American Food;
2) Aquagrill (In Soho)/Great Seafood.

+1 on the Blue Water Grill but I'd also highly recommend Becco on 46th (restaurant row).

 

What to do? How many years are you staying there? Better yet, what's not to do?

You're a day late to make it to Yankee Stadium for the Series, so scratch that.

For Food:
You must go over to Patsy's Italian at 236 WEst 56th ST. It is THE place where Sinatra used to eat/hang, and chances are that you'll see a celebrity in there (if you're into that...). PM me with your name and I'll let them know you're coming. Say hello to Joe, Sal, and Frankie. Ask Joe to tell you some Sinatra stories. Let Sal (Joe's son, and now the chef) know that you're a car/Ferrari guy, as he is breatheren.

Have the penne/broccoli rabe/sausage plate....or the veal chop jardinier (spelling?)....or Carol O'Connor's favorite: the angel hair pomodoro. Start off with the chopped salad! Have a few of Sal's meatballs as a side appetizer (almost as good as Mom's!). Get Vinny to bring you a bottle of Villa Antinori Peppoli for dinner. And absolutely make sure you have the Napolean for dessert - it's the best in NY!

For Pizza:
1) traditional neopolitan: I love Little Italy at 1 east 43rd street to grab a few slices. The cook on a bed of flavored breadcrumb and it's great
2) Grimaldi's at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge (Brooklyn side) is always #1 in NY. They make thin crust pizza...you can eat the whole pie yourself!
2a) or try Patsy's Pizzeria. They have 6 locations in the city (www.patsyspizzeriany.com)
3) for Sicilian pie, you have to go to New Hyde Park, Long Island (20 minute drive) and go to Umberto's on Jericho Turnpike. I'm salivating writing about it....it is THAT good!

I could go on....I lived in NY for 54 years.

No worries the city will take care of you.

See a play on Broadway and Times Square. Eat at the Buddha bar or in one of the million other trendy places. Visit the Apple store on fifth at midnight. Take a tour and see all the places you must see. Stay at the Waldorf Astoria and go for a LOOOOOONG walk in Manhattan.

You won't get bored.

Not kidding. It's the best.

 

Too much to see/do for one trip. Hit every restaurant mentioned above if possible. Broadway show definately, walk through Central Park, see some Museums, Rockefeller center, Lincoln center, shop on 5th avenue, take a subway, Statue of Liberty, Empire state building, eat at "The View" on top of the Marriot Marquis, grab a slice at Newpark Pizza in Howard Beach on crossbay blvd right off the Belt pkwy. Must have a "dirty water dog" on any Manhattan corner watch the Giants/Chargers at the Meadowlands on Sunday afternoon since baseball is over...If you are still there watch the Yankees parade down the Canyon of heros! this should keep you busy for 1 weekend the pace in NYC is fast

 

Gotta second that one. That's some good stuff.

 

Definitely have to hit the Italian restaurants for a tast of "Little Italy"....and I'm not talking about East Side Marios

 

My sister lives just outside DC - definitely a nice area to spend an evening.

That sounds pretty darn good.

I'd have to resist the temptation to wear a suit, large overcoat draped over my shoulders, black leather gloves, and find a black Lincoln Town Car for me to climb out the back of...

...but maybe I'm just immature and/or spent too many hours watching films based on mafia activities.
