1962 250 GTO "original body" for sale?

SPS Automotive in Hong Kong have listed this rather unique item. I'm guessing the crowd in this room might have a few things to say about its history?

I'm assuming that there is another 250 GTO out there that lays claim to the chassis this body was on, if their claim is legit. SPS are known for keeping some very exclusive items in their inventory. Anyway, the pictures are interesting if nothing else.

That looks like a new body to me, as several panels are unfinished (roof & door skins). Besides, no holes for the tail lights?

I don't think this body ever saw the inside of the Ferrari factory.

 

heard a report of a factory in main land China that starting up and would be doing turn key replicars.

Back end doesn't seem to have the right shape... Besides it's missing some features the real GTO should have... Openings behind rear wheels , no air-holes in pillar/roof behind the doorwindows... It has a funny looking boot-lid (also not the right shape...)

 

We've been here before. Whoever built that body has never even seen a real GTO. Neither did he have very good pictures to work on. Complete waste of time and materials. Best wishes, Kare

 

What's interesting about this ad is that you can get into a semantic debate about the word "original". Are they claiming that it is an "authentic, period built by Ferrari GTO body", or just an original creation by some unknown panel beater! Letting the reader of the ad leap to his or her own conclusions.

Well apologies if you've been down this road before and especially if there's nothing truly original about it. Frankly I'm pretty surprised that SPS would have an item like this that didn't have some shreds of legitimacy. The rest of their inventory is typically top notch.

The body pictured, is not only a new repro, but also totally wrong in so many respects.
During my ownership of #3527, I had the opportunity to see many of the original cars, and also a few non-original. The body has no holes or apertures for rear airducts, wipers, fuel filler. rearlights, handles etc etc; but the real problem is the shape.
Having spent many hours and miles looking out the windscreen, I can say that the front wings (fenders) are way too flat and wide in the top. The tail droops, and the rear wings are so humped up, they are a joke.
No 2 GTOs are alike, in the shape of the nose, wings and tail, but this body is a bad cartoon of what a GTO should be.

Is it not possible that this was a badly damaged body that one unaccomplished panel beater undertook to repair and and ready it for sale.
I am not intimtely familiar with the body lines of the Gto, but I have a great deal of knowledge about panel beating and have seen many good lines diminished by poor craftsmenship. One example comes to mind of one tour de France where all of the sharp fender lines were lost due to an inexperienced chaftsman., which necessated it being sent to my favorite shop in the Uk, ie, (Shapecraft).

 

Not remotely possible for any number of reasons. I used to hand wash my GTO before taking it out on the road each day and came to know every contour and nuance of its design. I saw and studied more than twenty GTOs gathered at Infineon paying particular attention to their individual traits. This body doesn't come close in any way that I can see.

 

Well... I wanted to find out what the story was behind this body so instead of guessing I emailed the seller.

Good idea. It may be all B S but it is a starting point. If it really is what he says it is there should be telltale signes which an expert on these Scaglietti bodies could look for. My guess they won't be found but if they are it casts a whole new light on this. just one man's opinion tongascrew

While vague, it implies that this metal is from 3765 LM.

The text is brochure speak and doesn't really say anything. It certainly falls short of certification. It would be nice if the panels were closer to GTO spec.

 

Interesting, I thought the GTO bodies were made in-house.

 

The "brochure speak" text says it was made in the late '60's which would be after the GTO's were being made so it is already saying it is not an original body.

 

FWIW, those panels have all the same flaws that the very first Allegretti bodies had (too high slab like body). That might indicate that it really is an old set of panels, but not quite as old as claimed and the loose interpretation "somebody made it in Italy ages ago" would be kinda close to the truth. PS: it sort of amuses me that those early Allegrettis were "good enough" to fool people at the time and were sometimes described as exact recreations that could not be told apart from the real thing. Going up and saying "that car looks like ****" would have cased a stirr. We have exactly the same situation with current replicas: they are wrong in many respects but so many people think that they cannot be told apart from a real thing. They can.

It is also interesting that you mention hand washing. Hand washing a car really helps you see all the finesses of a design. Too bad I never had a change to hand wash a GTO!
