I'm 29 years of age and have never sat in a Ferrari...let alone rode in or driven one. I'm starting to get some strange thoughts in my head as a result. I have a vivid sequence of getting in the drivers seat for the first time and turning the key to hear the engine come to life and feel the vibrations. Reversing the car...making that first shift from first to second...that first trip above 8k RPM. Starting to be unhealthy thoughts of mine.

Share your first driving experiences so that I can live through yours.

The first one I ever drove was mine, after I bought it.

I had just signed the papers and got the keys to the 328. I took the top off, fired it up and let it idle. The drive home was during rush hour, and I hadn't figured out the mirrors yet. The flying buttress on the passenger kept fooling me into thinking there was a car in the blind spot. The steering was heavy and so was the clutch, and I was nervous as a cat.

I did finally get a chance to open it up, and I loved the sound. Near the end of the run home, I pulled up next to a blond in a Corvette. She mouthed "nice car" and turned right...in retrospect, I might should have followed her.

My 'first time' is similar to Tillman's - but before I actually bought the car.
I was with the seller, top on, in the rain. Had never sat in a Ferrari before, much
less driven one. And certainly not in the rain! I think I shifted like my grandmother
would have - at like 2200, reaching a top speed of around 40 MPH. Nervous as
he11 the whole time that I'd break something!

But after I got her home (trucked across the US), and had all my legendary failures and
problems before I even had a chance to drive her, the first time I 'really drove'
the car - HEAVEN! It was coming back from the shop - opened her up and
shifted at 6.5k to each gear, blowing the speed limit on every road. Had a blast
    and never looked back.

Mine was pretty good but not as magical as I thought it would be. They are just cars after all and the new cars are super easy to drive.

I think years and years of adjectives spewed forth by automotive journalists set the bar pretty high.

With all due respect, have you ever actually driven a 3x8? It isn't anything like the
'new cars' and I don't think that any 3x8 owner would disagree with the years of adjectives.
    Spot on, those words :D

I took the Ferrari Driving Experience in Mont Tremblant just before I took delivery of my first car. They separate us into groups and my group was assigned to the skid pad first! I remember the instructor. "OK all of you guys know how the car drives on the street....now you're going to feel exactly how the car handles when you lose control...."

That was a memorable first drive for sure!

First time was more nerve wracking than I thought.

I drove a friend's 355 around the block, ground 4th gear, didn't get over 3500 rpm or 45 mph, and still had the time of my life.

It was more alive than anything I had ever driven (not an extensive list, but includes an M3 and a Nissan GT-R).

    Cheers.

    :)

My first drive was maybe 40 yards. Nailed the tee and it was a serious hook into the rough.

Adjusted the mirrors, realized the view out the plastic rear window was garbage and that my mirrors were my lifeline, reveled in the sound at idle, and away I went. Half a tank later, I pulled into the gas station to fill up. I didn't realize that the ignition had to be turned on to pop open the gas flap, so I preceded to inadvertantly pop the hood, and finally ended up opening the engine compartment to pull the gas flap release line. I only did that once.

It's an amazing experience, every time. In spite of the quirks and nuances of the vehicles, it is always a treat.

I had never driven a Ferrari before I bought my car, and then I had to wait 6 months for the workshop to get it right, so when it finally got delivered to my office one Friday afternoon I was nervous as a cat! And naturally the whole office had to come down into the garage to see what's going on... The exit from the garage was direct onto a very busy street and I didn't want to try leaving until the traffic quietened down - somebody quipped I'd still be there Monday morning. Finally I plucked up the courage - thought I was going to be sick from the fear that maybe my dream wouldn't be all I'd imagined, or that I wouldn't be able to handle the car. Anyway, I psyched myself into "It's just an overgrown X1/9" to get over that bit and by the time I got home, only about 5k, I was totally in love and knew I hadn't made a mistake. About 80,000k later, I'm still totally in love with it!

My first drive was in my 348SS before I bought it in SoCal. Quite a thrill. As I told someone the other day (at the time I was giving a ride to them in my 308QV), Ferrari's are something that actually live up to the hype when you finally drive one. Most things in life let you down, these cars don't.

It was a total disapointment...Being used to the torque of musle cars I was really taken-a-back by the eniter experiance. I thought to myself.."I could get out and walk faster then this thing"

But I took one home for the first time one evening and really wound it out on the back roads just north of me. WOW!! The damn thing is fast! Corners turn straight, and the power out of them was intense. Once I found the right gear to be in, and left it there, the damn car just continued to impress. I left my buddy in a Corvette in the dust..he could just not keep up in the corners. Straight aways was a whole other story.

But as I got use to the power delivery..I wanted more. I got totaly taken by a ZO6 when I was driving a 360...in every respect..but dam,n what a sound!!

The first one I ever drove was a 1992 348SS #25, it was black. Felt like I was dreaming.

The second one I ever drove was the one I ended up buying, also a 348SS but 1993 and #79 Yellow

The first one I drove was a dream, the second one was a dream come true :)

Within 30 minutes there were these little red and blue lights in my rear view mirror. But, the officer was cool and let me go! No so lucky later on.

This is a small portion of an article I wrote for a very popular mag :D

This was my first real drive in my 348 spider very exciting thrilling and nervous all at once.

" It is early in the morning the streets are very dry, I was very nervous driving
her, for I was not use to the Ferrari yet. She ran like a champ and was so very responsive. I had the car out for no more than an hour. In that one hour I had people follow me and want to talk about the car. At least 20 pictures were taken of the car and I even let a 5 year old girl sit in the car and had her picture taken by her very grateful father.
I was pulled over for not having my registration on the window. The friendly police officer let me go I think he really wanted to check out the car. During the 3 minutes that I was pulled over , someone decided to call into a local radio station to discuss my misfortune. About an hour later, my friends called me and asked if I had the car out today and if I had been pulled over. I asked how they knew and they said “because they were talking
    about you on the radio”

    The local radio station:
disc jockey 1: “We just saw a shinny red Ferrari pulled over on Victoria Ave, what the hell is this guy doing driving a Ferrari this time of year.
disc jockey 2 :”well if I owned a Ferrari I would want to drive it all year round too, wouldn’t you?” Incredible...

And that was all within 1 hour....I wander what the rest of the summer will bring."

On the same day I was able to drive a 360 spider and a 456. The spider was mesmerizing. I had the top down and I was able to take advantage of the sound, smell and feel of the whole experience. It felt like I was flying on air. The 456 was a well refined ride, classic lines and style. Almost like "a sheep in wolfs clothes". Not to be flamed I think i would choose the 456 as a daily driver over the spider !!

My first drive I was a nervous mess. I was wondering what I had done. Shifting was difficult and I don't think I ran the engine hard at all.

I'd say every day after that has been like a great relationship, it only gets better. Every time I drive the car I'm more smitten, and every time I'm away I miss it more. 87 Mondial

Wild and crazy. My first Ferrari ride or drive ever was in my 330 2+2 when I picked it up from transport dropoff on 3-15-03.

My first time was when my dad bought our first Ferrari this year. I was incredibly nervous and it didn't help that he kept lecturing me about what to do as if I'd never driven a car before. But I floored it through the first 2 gears at the straight near my house and went from 0 to 100 at warp speed. DAMN that was the most EXHILERATING experience I'd ever had in a car!! The sound was absolutely intoxicating and the g-force generated by the acceleration was simply out of this world, it was like being in a land missile!

Have told it before, but a demo drive in a brand new Dino 246, 1972.

It grew on me only a long time after the first experience.

I owned a 911 at the time, and the Dino seemed to be just a little heavier and slower. The steering/seat/pedal layout seemed to be made for somebody else - a shorter somebody else with shorter legs and longer arms. The engine was superb, but again, not as fast as my Porsche. Steering, again superb, but strangely much "slower" in ratio than I had expected.

Only later did I realize what I had missed out on for only $3,000 difference over my 911.
