I looked at a black 328 Euro from a seller in PA over the winter. In fact it was widely discussed here, the one that was on ebay 3 times/never sold, and consequently was branded tarnished. It had a few minor issues, but was probably a really good car for it's ask.

Turns out a guy in SC bought it, and my brother (living in SC where my 328 snowbirds) wound up literally running into this guy in my Euro 328 at a stop light (crawling, no damage to either bumper thank God).

Anyway, just learned that the guy totaled the car already, no further details. Despite what we all virtually judged the car to be, it didn't deserve this. Makes-a-me so sad. :(

One less 328 in the gene pool; makes yours more special/valuable ;-) But I share your sentiments...have fun driving but don't be stupid.

Not to take a joke and go on a serious tangent, but there's actually very little evidence for larger series-produced cars that losing one increases the value of others. It CAN be true for extremely low-production cars, but...certainly not for the 328.

Basically, here's the way to think about it:

    1) If the total number of cars produced makes it impossible to count the survivors, then the number on which collectors go is indeed the total production.

    2) All collector cars have an expected mortality rate. Some are higher than others. Impala's rate is high compared to Camaro, which is high compared to Corvette, which is certainly higher than Ferrari. The estimated mortality rate is just one factor.

    3) I've written quite a bit about the misconceptions regarding rarity. While rarity is great when talking about the highest-performance version of a widely-produced line...or a car that was an ultra-desirable dream car when new, often it is mass-production that makes a car valuable on classic car market. When all is said and done, one can't be nostalgic about something one has never seen.

    4) In the case of a car like the 328, the higher production actually works in its favor for future collectability. It's somewhat the best of all worlds: it's the highest performance of the 308-328 line, which was in part a dream/icon car, but produced in enough numbers so that people actually saw them. As the car continues to age, there are enough produced and surviving to steadily set trends throughout a given period. Like Z28 Camaros or Six-Pack 'Cudas, it's not a rarity to see a 246, 308 or 328 at auction. Like with the 246, values can take-off with vengance.

As I always say, if rarity were the most important factor (as people often claim it is), then the 308 GT4 would be worth more than a 328...and one of 34 '55 Hudson Rambler Business Sedans would be worth more than any 8-cyl Ferrari ;).

wait, so he was driving your 328 and hit another 328? Am I reading that right?
And your brother's car had no damage but the other car was totaled?

    I'm confused

It sounds to me like two 328s bumped into each other with no damage, but that one of the 328s was wrecked shortly thereafter in another, separate incident. :(
