Does anyone still use UseNet / Newsgroups?

I was a Newsgroup junkie starting around 1991 (before the 'web' existed
as we know it). I subscribed to many services (some free, later the free
ones went away so I got Meganetnews.com). At the beginning I was running
a Mac and logging into a local UNIX BBS for access.

But I haven't used UseNet in YEARS now - 10 years ago, Ferrari Chat
would have probably been alt.automotive.cars.ferrari.ferrarichat or some
such

Does anyone here still check/contribute on UseNet?

I don't post a whole lot these days, but still an avid reader of a few newsgroups.

 

I check occasionally. It's good to see the R.M.H VB&G is still operational.

 

alt.binaries.audiobooks
alt.binaries.audiobooks.highspeed
etc.

I access these weekly using giganews.

 

I used to read/post on a few newsgroups with tin/trn like 15 years ago. Haven't posted in years.. I have friends that use it a lot for games & movies, though.

 

If you're ISP (in this case Qwest for me) does not allow or have access to newsgroups is there a 3rd party client or other way to access them?


I miss the days of my video game newsgroups!

 

I'm not a Qwest subscriber so maybe this doesn't work for you but have you tried http://www.qwest.net/help/newsgroups.html#auth ?

 

I used www.meganetnews.com - not free, but not filtered - you get every single
group in existence. But I haven't used them for several years - still there though.

The smart guys are using usenet more and moving away from torrents

 

But not many ISPs include the binary groups these days, so cheapskates like me are SOL.

 

The smart guys never used torrents to begin with
