I posted the thread because I was curious if anybody here knew the guy. He has a bunch of sports cars so I figured somebody here would probably know him. Something happened with a lot of money and given the economic times and the Ponzi schemers who have been exposed recently there is nothing wrong with the topic or the subforum where it is posted.

Personally, I don't want to crucify the guy but where there is smoke there is fire. When you have the FBI and the IRS searching your office and your attorney is making statements like "he's back to face the music" there is obviously some level of guilt. Whether he is a good guy or not has little to do with the discussion.

I still stand by my earlier post about the charitable contributions. It seems these type of theievs have no problem donating to charities. I guess when it is not your money you're giving away it is a lot easier to do.

Scottie, sorry you're upset over the thread.

    Scotty,

I think we all realize that you are friends with the Rothstein's and your position on the matter is more than common amongst people who are friends, but I think that thread is worthy of continuing within this forum as the events themselves are both intriguing and somewhat shocking by anyone's standards.

As this story continues to unravel and reveal more and more facts that would allow people to better understand what actually took place, you have to admit that the facts so far indicate that there is some form of wrongdoing that took place. Innocent people generally don't take private jets to Morocco after asking collegues what countries do not extradite, send text messages indicating suicidal intentions, nor do they make public admissions through counsel that they are now willing to face the music.

It is really a shame that a well respected attorney and firm should come to this demise and even though with all of the good that Rothstein may have done in the past, I'm sure that there some mistakes made along the way as well. Who hasn't made mistakes?.....I think every one of us have found ourselves in that category at one time or another in our lives.

Some mistakes are larger than others, and if any of us have learned anything from the Madoff fiasco, this case has the potential to leave an endless trail of damaged lives and people that have lost a good portion of or everything they have.

I guess interest is high because it strikes so close to home and with a known person within this community. I don't think anyone is trying to hang this guy out to dry here in the forum, but it's pretty hard to deny that things aren't looking too good or are in his favor right now.

It is an automobile based WEBSITE.

What is being written is salacious drivel bordering on slander with absolutely no factual basis by people who know nothing more than what they have read in the paper.

Finally, I fail to see what "implications" this crap may have on other members of this website. If you were involved, you would KNOW and wouldn't have to rely on the nonsense being spewed on some AUTOMOBILE forum.

If you want to read the story - spend $.50 and buy a newspaper.

This is nothing but personal attacks on someone that is not even a member or participant in the forum. It is offensive and wrong and should be deleted.

Newspapers have pretty savvy legal counsel these days so after reading all the stories so far in these so called $.50 newspapers I will venture that where there is smoke there is fire.
Obviously you have some personal interest here and it is clouding your [im]partial judgement. Oh and by the way on this AUTOMOTIVE website there are threads on business, politics & religion, watches, real estate and the like so I think all is fair game.

It is a good opportunity for people to see what the warning signs are for a high level scam. Again.

The Sun-Sentinel says the Feds raided Euromotorsport and seized 4 of his cars today too.

FBI agents and three flatbed trucks arrived this morning at Euro Motorsport, 925 W. Broward Blvd. One of the first vehicles loaded on a flatbed truck was a blue Rolls Royce Phantom registered to Rothstein that's for sale on the dealer's website for $359,950.

"I don't have comments," said a man who acknowledged he "sometimes" works at Euro Motorsports.

Agents also seized a 2008 Ferrari F430 Spider selling for $234,950 that's registered to a Rothstein corporation. Two other Rothstein vehicles, a 2007 Spyker and a 2010 Lamborghini Murcielago with just 95 miles, are listed in Euro Motorsports' sales inventory.

I wonder if there will be any bargains at the auction :)

Although it seems that things don't look good for Mr. Rothstein, I don't think Scottie's intention was to say the guy was innocent....only that until evidence or other credible information surfaced that it wasn't right to blast the guy. Yes, that evidence has started surfacing, and even Mr. Rothstein admitted to wrongdoing on the news...........

BUT, I can tell you that I respect and admire Scottie for standing by his friend, and sticking up for him before all the cards were on the table. That is the sign of a honorable person, a true friend, and someone who we should all be so lucky to have in our corner when times are tough.

He took money as an investment for settlement payouts. Let's say someone wins a $500K whistleblower suit. The reality is that with appeals, companies going BK and a list of many factors it might take a while for the plaintiff to get the $500K. The winner decides to take $400K now instead of waiting. The scam was to collect $400K for the early payout and then commit to investors that they would get $500k or a 25% return in a short period of time. Which begs the question, if he had so much horsepower why didn't he just borrow the $400K at low rates and pocket the delta to $500K? This isn't like a real estate deal where you need investors to put the whole deal together. At any rate, he kept taking more and more of the "investments" which were deposited into accounts under his control. He then spent the money on G Five travel, cars, boats, and so on. The accounts were not registered, the promised returns were ridiculous, and as near as I can tell the paper trail is murky at best. While everybody in the firm is expressing shock and disbelief I find it hard to believe that others didn't know. A controller at least would be involved to run accounts and what not. Time will tell on that.
