As the thread says...I used Mobil 1 last change which can be found anywhere. After reading more about the benefits of ZDDP I'm going to Red Line (and thanks to Fastradio for consulting). Where do you guys in CT buy this? Hit the phone book for a local high performance shop? Or is there a bigger regional seller with better prices?

    Thanks -

Darn. I wish I knew this yesterday. Just spent $22.00 for a 5 gallon container of Mobil 1 at Walmart, which I already opened.

You're fine Joe for just topping off. The ZDDP benefits of redline would be too diluted to make a difference if you're adding 1-2 qts to what's already in there. Plus it's $10 a quart!

There is no substitute for Royal Purple IMHO. Have it in the 348 and have used it in every racecar I've owned. You can get it much easier and it is less expensive too. Just my .02

    Hi Jay,

I've been using Red Line Oil in the 355.

I bought some this past spring at a local speed shop (read drag cars). I cringed when the woman behind the counter asked what type of car I had. I was just waiting for the 'foreign junk' jokes to commence from the other patrons. But no quips were exchanged and I got outta there with my oil in hand.

To find a local source go to RedLineOil.com, click on the dealers tab and enter your zip code.
Only caution is to be certain to confirm that the dealer you select carries the oil. Not all dealers carry the full Red Line product range.

Let me know if you cannot get it locally and I can pick some up for you.
I'll even deliver it to SB in Glastonbury. Gives me the perfect excuse to make the drive down.

Sounds like we may need to place a bulk order.

Mike is right on the money. Dr. Ferrari/Jim Mcgee from Pocono Sportscar just told me the same thing this afternoon.

I'm going to change the oil myself for the first time on the Ferrari. I was going to use Mobil 1 15w-50. Is that a mistake? Also, is it OK to reuse the copper washer?

Just order Redline or whatever you decide on through Amazon by the case or bottle.

I order Royal Purple through them for all my cars. It shows up at the door within a couple of days. No need to drive around looking for a speed shop that has enough in stock or the viscosity I need. They have it all.

RedLine oil can be purchased through Bavarian Auto in Portsmouth, NH at very reasonable prices, particularly when you consider that they have free UPS shipping for orders over $150...

    www.bavauto.com

About a year ago I switched over from Mobil-1 to RedLine...as in most grades, RedLine has higher levels of ZDDP. Mobil-1, in the 15W-50 grade still has very high levels of ZDDP, so this is still a viable choice.

In all Ferrari transaxles, I use RP 75W-90, MaxGear. This is a GL-5 oil which does not cause any issues with chattering differential plates or synchros. This has been my oil of choice for nearly 10 years. I purchase it from Amazon.com in 5-gallon pails....and use a small barrel pump to disperse.

    Best,
    David

I had no idea Amazon sold oil! Looks like the Red Line is just $20 more for a case of 12 than Royal Purple...so for now, I'll go with Red Line.

I'll use the Mobil 1. I already have 3 gallons of it. I'm not concerned about more ZDDP. But I would like some more ZIP. Any oils with that additive?

Dean, Tommy, the head of service at Miller Motorcars in Greenwich (A Ferrari Dealer) told me to go with 15/50. Jay ( Uconn Husky's) guy Jim McGee from Pocono Sportscar told me that was too heavy a weight and I should be using a 5W/40 in either Castrol Syntec or Royal purple. Good luck.

My owners manual (348) calls for 10W40. I also think 15/50 is to heavy. 5w40 sounds perfect. I am a fan of Castrol Syntec but admittedly know nothing about the additive you speak of.

RE- Gearbox...Royal Purple in it now from the rebuild but I'm going back to Redline at my next change.

What ever happened to 9 quarts of good old Castrol GTX 20W50 like I use?

If I switched to synthetic in the 308 I would have to add a quart a week from all the oil that would leak out from around all the seals given how small the synthetic molecules are.

Black Horse advised me against synthetic unless I pull the motor and do every seal on the engine in the 308.

Well there's one school of thought advising MUCH thinner...0W-20. That's a bit extreme to me...talked with one pro on here who races a 355, he said if oil temps aren't getting too hot it's safe to go a little lighter like 5W-30 or 10W-30. Realistically my car sees more cool weather driving than hot weather; when it's cooking 95F hot in August I'm usually not in the 355. I'd rather get it flowing quicker on startup, where most wear takes place.
