I'm getting a squeal from my brakes when I come to a stop. No grinding or anything unusual upon hard braking or normal driving. Just rolling to a traffic light or other slow speeds upon stopping, that annoying squeal comes out. I've been told (by a Ferrari mechanic) that Ferrari brakes are very "metallic" and this is normal. He looked at the brakes and said the pads look fine, but the rotors are very "sheen" which is probably the culprit.

If this is normal, is there anything I can spray on the rotors to stop the squeal? Or should I just replace the rotors and pad with something better? Any recommendations on rotors and pads? My car is strictly a street car and never goes near the track.

I can't take the noise!!! Thanks!!

    My 02c, FWIW:

    1. At some point during the life of the pads/rotors you're likely to get some squeal at some point(s).
    2. You mention "sheen" - I'd probably call that "glazing" - Can often be cleared by standing on the brakes - *hard* - Get 'em up to temp..... [Usual disclaimers apply here of course :)] We used to spend "hours" with wet & dry paper on the rotors of the race cars removing glazing btw, but that involves removing the wheels.....
    3. Pad choice is another big variable - Search here and you'll find lots of comments on dust -versus- squeal and the like.....

As to rotors, mine does see the track, and I'm on my 3rd set (!) - They're slotted from Girodisc (sponsor?) and were recommended by Rifledriver - The best yet IMHO.

    Cheers,
    Ian

Thanks Ian! I appreciate the advice!

Yes, you're correct on the "glazing" term...

How do I get them up to temp before hard braking? Just ride them a bit?

As for taking the wheels off, I don't mind doing this. What do I sand them with?

    Thanks again!

I wouldn't..... Others may have better ideas, but repeatedly accelerating to, say 60-70 and slowing to about 20 at the limit would be my choice [Ever feel the ABS? You should....]

While "riding" the brakes will get 'em hot, I believe it's the cycling that *may* help your slow speed squeal.

200-400 grade wet & dry or "emery cloth" (Is that what it's called here in the States? - I knew it as that in the UK?) But, it's a lot of work, and I suspect your situation will improve, but only until they glaze over again. If you give this a try, you should also remove the pads and sand them as well btw..... [A slight chamfer on the leading edge of the pads is also rumored to help.]

Incidentally, I'm surprised no smart arse has commented on:

Someone answered that question with, "yeah, oil!" recently - IIRC, it all wound up with someone getting banned :D

[And no, never put oil on your rotors! ;)]

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Ian is da' man.

I still get the odd squeal every now and again, gives it that race-car sound when pulling to a stop! ;)

I've tried stock, EBC and Porterfield pads, they all did the same. No glazing over here, I think it's a pretty normal occurrence.

Thanks Ian! I will try driving and getting them up to speed and braking. If that doesn't work, I'll try sanding them with the emory cloth, as you suggested.

If all else fails, I'll cut a hole in the floorpan and use my feet to stop instead of the brakes...kind of like the Flinestones :)

    Thanks again!

hi guys... that squeal noise killed me for almost 3 months... i hated it... i used to try giving it long and strong braking action, it would help only for few minutes... i hated it so much that i finally decided to change all four rotors and brake pads! I know it is a lot of dollars (i can give u details if u want ~3k$) , but honestly my mechanic said that all trials other that that would be temporary. I believed him and as an engineer i thought that the situation would reappear unless a drastic change is made. This is my opinion...
Wow how good it feels to aproach a stop sign without squealing like a VW.
