Heritage plate NSW # 104 sold for $167k against a predicted range of $135-$160k.

The heritage plate market is still going well.

I have not, and never will, understand the (crazy) prices for just plates with numbers. it's not even clever word or anything.. its just.. numbers.. the UK market even more distorted with the poor chaps paying mega bucks to have something resembling a word.. just to prove you have the $ to do so?.. its just tin plate.. nothing useful at all in it.

Good luck to all who trade in them for profit though :)

Just wondering say if i buy some number plate from vicroads, euro/personal/whatever and i don't put on my honda, just leave it there for my new car or whatever, is there a certain time frame i HAVE to have it on a vehicle before vicroads revoke my rights to "own" those plates?

NO you can hold them for life without putting them on the car. I have 3 sets of FOAM, Blue, Red and Black. From my understanding VicRoads own all plates, what you pay for is the right to use it. They have that clause so they can recall and remove plates from use. Recent example has been some personal plates that have been seen as offensive.

    pretty simple

they have historic significance, theres a finite number of them, and theres plenty of folks with cash who find them interesting

    basic supply and demand.

Yep I guess that's what I thought when in UK I bought L11SST and put a bolt between the 1's,

    LUSST

I think I paid £250 for it and sold it when I left to come here for over double, the buyer probably will do the same thing :) Here I believe single letter plates have changed hands for over $250K!

And to add to that, the reason they have historic significance is because they were the 1st number plates here in oz to be issued. From 1910 to 1937 you could only get numbers(other states may vary).

There is also a $$$ transfer fee involved with 1 - 6 digit, number plates. They don't come with yearly fees like the personalised plates but it does cost a fair bit to transfer the plates to another car/bike.
    1 digit = $8,712
    2 digit = $3,485
    3 digit = $1,742

Just on those prices you can see why they hold a premium.

The regular personalised plates come with a yearly fee of up to $440 so I guess people try to get there money back selling them for $$$

"Isn't it odd what some people find interesting and pay a lot for" lol.

I also think its quite amusing what people 'Think' other people will pay for their plates. Quite a laugh seeing listings for stupid personalised plates and the asking 6 digit price.

    $150k
